Help with Eczema - Barrington,IL

My 13 month old daughter has problems with eczema as well, and, I also didn't have any luck with aquafor, erucerin, aveeno or other products. My pediatrician prescribed alclometasone ointment to use sparingly when she has flareups. It has worked wonders.

I agree with using soaps - both laundry and what you bathe him with are fragrance, dye and chemical free. These are known irritants to anyone's skin and certainly makes eczema worse. It is so hard watching our little ones with things like this that can be taken care of if you use the right products.

There is an entire line of babycare products that help with their tender and sensitive skin that is botanically based and helps with skin conditions such as these. Do NOT use products that contain mineral oil or Vaseline as they are occlusive and just sit on top of the skin. Not good for anyone's skin. Check your lotions and body washes as well.

On thing that can cause eczema is the soap you are using. Make sure you are using a very mild soap better yet home made soaps with not additives of any kind. Foods can also cause eczema. If your child is eating any solids yet keep a diary of foods your child eats. that way if there are trigger foods you will avoid them. Stay away for clothes made with a lot of scratchy materials such as wool.

One of the best treatments for eczema is right in your back yard. sunlight. Sunlight or tanning bed light is great for eczema. It is called photo therapy. I know your child is to young of a tanning bed but with summer coming get out in that sun as much as possible.

Also try oatmeal baths and oatmeal based creams. Corticosteroid creams or ointments can help with itching. We have used an ointment with tea tree oil in it also, it works very well. You may end up needing to get an antibiotic if the eczema gets to bad.

when my twins were around that age, Disney's Eczema wash and Lotion helped a lot. I think they also call it Gentle Naturals with Winnie the Pooh on the front. That helped a lot. Are you also using hydrocortisone CREAM or OINTMENT? B/c, in the past, cream was never strong enough. But the ointment was. We would combine all these methods of the Disney products with the hydrocortisone ointment and also a prescription of mupirocen to disinfect the skin if it ever gets really bad.

My daughter and I both have mild eczema - and neither of us have any allergies - at all!! I have a prescription that works really well, and I only need to use it sparingly. I would also try some vaseline to keep the area moist and keep it from getting itchy.

I was just wondering if you tried Eucerin Lotion or Cream?
My pediatrician told me to only use the cream and to use it all the time. There is also a CVS brand cream that is similiar. The Eucerin lotion will not work. Also, if you are truly concerned about it...go to a dermatologist. When my son was 2 our pediatrician prescribed a steroid cream and it created a whole year of problems. Once you start using a steroid cream, their skin gets used to the cream and will clear up but once you stop using it the rash will come back. We had to end up going to a pediatric dermatologist and had to try a whole bunch of different medications to clear up the rash that was due to the overuse of steroid cream. Good Luck!

Don't use Elidel, a Rx cream. It works like a charm but it has a black box warning (causes cancer) We had used it for months before the FDA announced that it was dangerous but it didn't get pulled from the shelves, just relabeled.
My neighbor recently told me her little girl was prescribed Elidel! How irresponsible that doctors are still writing that, for children! Do your homework on what goes onto your child's and your own skin. Our bodies absorb more than 60% of what is topically applied.

She tried olive oil at my suggestion and it worked well.

I understand your troubles with excema. My 5 year old son has battled excema since he was 6 months old. We have tried eucerin and aquafor, and they helped a little, but nothing has helped as much as Arbonne's Baby Care line. Their hair and body wash and body oil have all but "cured" my son's excema. He no longer has any dry patches on his torso or legs (where it was predominantly). If it is not clearing up with the hydocortisone cream then I would guess he has an allergy to something that is causing it. My son had it around 6 months and I let the doctors try many things before I figured out he was allergic to sweet potatoes! Soon as I eliminated them(in mixed veghgies too0 and then used the cream he was fine. He has now developed all sorts of allergies(eggs,milk,peanuts,oranges, etc) and the eczema is back!!! Good luck!

I completely understand what you are going through. My daughter who is 2 and half had horrible ezcema from head to toe as an infant. My friend who is 30 also has ezcema. The best thing that worked for my daughter and friend was the Arbonne baby care wash and lotion. I am able to avoid using prescription steriod creams by switching products! I STRONGLY SUGGEST NOT USING VASELINE OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT HAS MINERAL OIL IN IT! It just makes it worse, and it is like putting plastic wrap on your skin. my son (now 21 mos) had eczema on his arms legs and face for most of his first year...what I did that seemed to help was switch laundry detergents to all free (or another brand without dyes or scents) and we had to use eucerin baby wash on him. I was advised against putting vaseline on the areas but I do have a question for you...does your little boy drool alot or does his bottle drip and moisten the area you are noticing the redness and scales...this could irritate the area so try to keep it dry. We also found that the best lotion for his condition was lubriderm for very sensitive skin...Also, my son outgrew this by the time he was about a year old so good luck!

You may need a steroid cream to clear it up that the Dr. would prescribe. They will have you use it for no more than two weeks and then try to keep it gone with the creams you are currently putting on a couple times a day.

I saw your post about the eczema and we have dealt with the issue a bit in our home as well. The main thing is to get a laundry soap and anything else that touches your child's body free of chemicals that irritate the skin.
