How Long Did It Take to Get Pregnant for the Second Time?

Because of my age, I have to start thinking about a second pregancy now. I was able to get pregnant the first time really quickly! While I'm going to wait until my little one is a year old (in 4 months), time is flying by. I am a working Mom, so I have to give some time to accumulate my leave again, and I want to spend as much time with my first born as much as I can. However, I'll be hitting 40 by next year. I'm just wondering for all you Moms who waited later in life, how long did it take you to get pregnant the second time around? I don't know that there is real science to it, I know if it is meant to be it will happen. Part of me doesn't want to try too soon, I'm really enjoying my baby, and having another will change the dynamics to an already every moment changing life, but I want my child to have a silbling. I'm trying to decide when is the best time to try.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your replies! I appreciate everyone's candor and I'm very opinionated so from one Mom to all you MOMS I greatly appreciate your honesty and your true feelings. We're all entitled. I'm definitely going to wait for my body to heal. I'm finally getting into a routine and want to be in optimum shape, (that doesn't mean skinny, just feeling the best I can) so when I do get PG again, I hope that will give my unborn the best chance of survival. I truly have weighted everyone's input and think I will start sometime after my first born's one year mark. I won't so much start "trying", but just go off the pill and see what happens, if it doesn't within 3 months or so, I will see what the doctor says and try some of your suggestions. As much as I want to have a second, I want to see if nature takes its course naturally. I feel if it's meant to be then it'll happen. I guess once I go through it (trying to get PG for the second time later in life) then will I only be able to decide what's best for my family at that time. I definitely agree with you all that I want to get pregnant before the age of 40 due to the medical complications that come from it, but like many of you and I have friends to prove it, it doesn't preclude me from having them either after 40! Thanks again! I really appreciate all of you sharing with me!

It happened for us really quickly.....first try actually. My baby was only five months old at the time. But I have a friend that tried for seven months before she got pregnant with her second (she had gotten pregnant much faster first time around). I am thirty six, so like you, I waited a little later in life to start a family. I don't think there's any science to getting pregnant quickly.....we were shocked it happened so fast for us. It appears to be different for everyone.

The "medical answer" is that it is best for your body to have a full 12 months between pregnancies. If you had a c-section, then some doctors will tell you 18 months. The difference has to do with making sure that your scar is as strong as possible going into pregnancy #2.

It took us 2 weeks to get pregnant with #1 when I was 35. We tried for 3 months for #2 (due in August) and I am now 38.5. I say "tried" meaning we were not using any protection - honestly, I'm not sure that we "tried" at the right time of the month the first time since I wasn't charting.

Accumulate some leave time and enjoy your baby. It is very hard to have two babies so maybe you want to wait until your first is a bit over a year - also do think about it in terms of your leave and the MAJOR costs of two in child care. Don't worry about what if's...this is one area we can't completely control - leave it in the hands of a higher power. Plus, Madonna had Rocco at age 41!

I just got a positive HPT yesterday, after trying for # 2 for 18 months. I am 25, and got pregnant very easy the first time. Not so much the second time. I know I probably do not fit in the age category you are asking about, but I thought I'd chime in. Good luck to you when you start trying. When that time comes, and if you are interested, you might try a product called Pre-Seed and Instead Cups. I used both this past cycle and obviously one of the two worked because the previous 17 months passed with negative HPT's. :) Again, good luck.

From my experience, don't wait! I had my first child at 35, tried for a second 1 1/2 years later. I suffer from secondary infertility, began menopause at 37(they call it premature ovarian failure at that age) Wish I would have known or I would have frozen some eggs or something. Now I am 42 and realize it is just not going to happen. At least get your thyroid checked and your FSH level (follicle stimulating hormone) to make sure they are normal.
I, too, was waiting for "the right time" to try for baby #2, wanted them to be a certain number of years apart, etc. Some things you cannot plan.
Good Luck!

If I were you I would start trying until you are ready to pregnant at that point. With my first I thought the same as you...."It's gonna take a few months to get pregnant so I should start now." Nope I got pregnant that first month and almost had a baby right before Christmas. So with the next I thought the same thing again, "The first time was just a fluke, I'm sure I won't get pregnant again that fast." Sure enough a month later I was pregnant again. I guess I'm just saying that it could happen faster than you think so I would wait until you are for sure ready.

Tough question, mainly because everyone is so different and just because someone else got pregnant fast doesn't mean you will - I'm sure I don't have to tell you that, I guess it's the mother in me! I was 34 when my first was born and I unexpectedly ended up quitting work soon after going back when she was about 5 months old. Since I was already home, we decided to try for another baby so we could have them close in age and so we could have the two we wanted and have it out of the way! We started trying slowly when she was around 8 months and I was pregnant two months later, when she was 10 months.

It certainly was trying, being pregnant and having a baby, and she breastfed until she was 14 months and I just couldn't take it any longer - plus, she couldn't fit on my lap very well any longer!

Having my two girls close together was very hard and continued to be (theya re 3 and 4 now) but I wouldn't change a thing. They are the best of friends and enemies from one moment to the next and we're having a wonderful ride! Sorry, I kind of went off on tangents here! I hope something I babbled about helps - best wishes to you!

Im 36 and pregnant with my second-though this was not planned exactly-I was surprised how quick I became pregnant. I work with a few girls in their 20's who have had challenges trying to get pregnant and I wasnt exactly trying and it happened so quickly for me..so you really never know. It is a huge decision and your right as we are "advanced maternal age" LOL! you hear constantly how our eggs are getting older and our fertility is slipping..so that part is sadly a bit of reality so I would not wait too long. You said your little one will one year old in 4 months-that doesnt seem so far off. And chances are you will probably be fine TTC especially if you had no issues with conceiving your first. Talk with your doctor, start taking your prenatals and gearing up for #2 during the next few months. Good luck!

I got pregnant with my first born at 39 and had him at 40. I breastfed him almost until he was 3 years old. My doctor told me to stop breastfeeding but he was the one that was here. I did start trying when he was 9 months old but I didn't have much time for myself and alone time with my hubby.

My son demands a lot of time and attention. Once I weaned him off the nights, I got pregnant with my daughter; I was 42 and had her at 43.

I would love to wait four years and have a set of boy girl twins but children demand so much time and I want to give my daughter what I gave my son. I will breastfeed her until she weans herself. My son starts school in August. He is the love of my life so understand your relationship. My advice is to enjoy your child as much as you can. I was enjoying my son so much that poof I got pregnant so quickly without even trying.

Put it out there but remember to enjoy the now. It goes by so fast.

I was 34 when I got pregnant with my 2nd. We started when my oldest turned one. I also thought it would take a while to get pregnant. I was counting on that actually! I was pregnant with my 2nd the 2nd month of trying. My sons are 22 months apart.

It took us seven months of actively trying to get pregnant the second time. I started tracking my basal body temperature (BBT) and for our third pregnancy, I knew when I was going to ovulate, we had intercourse that night, and I got pregnant. I truly believe in BBT charting. If you are unfamiliar, get a book (I just checked it out from the library) called Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. She also has a website at www.tcoyf.com. Good luck and best wishes!

I would say try NOW. I was 39 when I was pregnant w/ my son & 40 when he was born - but since it took only 5 weeks for the 1st pregnancy (miscarriage) & 4 months for the second (got my son :) I waited until he was done nursing 18 months later "because we got pregnant so easily"... I am now on my 3rd round of IVF (for PGD genetic testing-due to my age, not infertility) @ 43 & it is no longer "when I get pregnant", it has become "if I get pregnant". SO, my personal advice- Start NOW- you'll have at least another 9 months alone with your 1st! :)

If time is a factor for you because of your age, I would say to start trying now. Who knows how long it will take and you will have 9 months before the new baby comes. This is just my opionion of course. This way you will be absolutely done by 40 if 2 is all you want. There are pros and cons in waiting. But I think if your age is a factor you should try now. Adjusting to 2 kids is hard at any age whether they are 2 years or 10 years apart. I have a 4 year old, and a 4 month old. Some things are easier like not changing 2 baby diapers and some things are difficult like the fact that my 4 year old has regressed on potty training and acts out. I hope whatever you decide works out for you.
