How Much Does Your 4 1/2 Month Old Eat?

I just started out feeding my daughter solids on Sunday. I am giving her 1 tbsp of rice cereal to about 1-2 oz of breastmilk 1x per day. Should I give her more? She eats it all & nurses afterwards. Should I start giving her a fruit or vegetable with the cereal or maybe give her 2 meals a day? I'm just not sure exactly how much I really should be giving her. I know that nursing should still be her number 1 source of food & nutrition.

***just for the record since Jessica seems to think that I am doing things wrong, the cereal I bought (Earth's Best Whole Grain Rice Cereal) says 1 TABLESPOON of cereal w/3-4 tablespoons of milk. The consistancy of the cereal was very thin, almost watery, so choking is NOT an issue. I know a lot of mom's that breastfeed exclusively & have started cereal around the same age as my baby, who is almost 5 mos old. If I didn't think she was ready I wouldn't have started it.***

What can I do next?

When my son was that age we started him on a breakfast, lunch, dinner cycle. He got cereal 3 meals a day just like regular meals. I wouldn't start her on fruits and veggies just yet. You really need to give her time to adjust to the cereal. She has to learn the right tongue movements to move the food to the back of her mouth. You also only want to introduce one new food at a time. And give her several days on that one food. You can also introduce other cereals. But again, give her like a week on each new thing.

my daughter is 3 months old and every bottle she gets has cereal in it. She doesn't get full from just the formula ( i was breastfeeding but dried up on my own) If your daughter is still hungry maybe try 2 bottles with cereal a day? I also sometimes will mix a tiny bit of pears into the bottle with cereal...brianna loves it lol. Hope it helps and good luck.

I have a 4 and a half month old, too - Isn't it wonderful?! Every stage seems more exciting than the one before it!!

I feed him 1 ounce of milk with enough rice cereal to make it almost the consistency of oatmeal (I only gave it to him thinned out in the beginning when he was getting used to using a spoon). Now that it's thicker, it almost seems easier for him to eat. We have started fruits and vegetables, as well. I'll add a tablespoon or so of applesauce mixed in with the rice cereal. Every 3 or 4 days we'll try something new once we can confirm that he doesn't appear to have any allergies. I also do the same thing you do - first I feed him the cereal/fruit and then I breastfeed him. As for how much cereal to give her - she'll let you know when she's had enough. Typically, my son starts to fuss when he's ready to move on to milk, which coincidentally happens to be after the 1 ounce of milk/cereal mixture, but if your daughter wants more than that, that's fine, too. Children are great at self-regulating at this stage, so they'll stop when they've had enough.

(That probably doesn't help!) Best of luck!

OMG my son is the same age!! AND OMG HE CAN EAT!!!! Have you tried oatmeal?? My son loves it and I even have a picture with him taking the spoon away and holding it and eating it himself
...he's a bit greedy! But we have started fruits and vegetables!! He loves apple sauce! I gave him sweet potatoes on thanksgiving in honor of what we were eating and he hated it!! So I am moving on to Peas!! I would definitley move on to Solids!!! Plus my doctor told me to introduce him to something new in the 1's every 4-5 days!!

P.S Target has the cheapest gerber food in the plastic containers that are reusable!! There $1.07 for 2 but if you catch them on sale their .87 sometimes!! I kinda stocked up on them!!

You can try to give her some fruits and vegetables, and see how that goes. I have a friend that has a son who just turned 6mnths yesterday, he also breastfeeds. He is eating 3x aday, and has at least 2 to 4 of the 2 1/2oz containers. and still breastfeeds. And hes doing just fine on those. Also try making the cereal a little bit thicker, that might help her to be not so hungry. I would tell you what i did with my gurls, but i didnt breastfeed them, thats why i told you about my friend and her son. I started to feed my gurls cereal and food at 2mnths old, a little bit here and there, not full fledge, i didnt start doin that til they were like 3-4mnths old. One of my daughters is also very high maintence, and she got really fussy one what she ate and drank, so it was hard to decide on stuff for them, and she also got really colicy after some of the foods we gave her so we had to watch that area too. So i kno what ur goin through..hehe. But yeah just try some fruits and vegetables, and try to make the cereal a little thicker, and go from there. if it didnt work, then u can blame me..hehe..

You should actually be starting out with 1/4 TSP of rice cereal per 1 ounce of milk. You can offer it 1-2 times per day to start, but be wary of her bowel movements stiffening up drastically. The consistency should be very thin, and as she gets better learning how to make the chewing motions and swallowing properly, you can gradually thicken it. I'm a bit surprised that you're BF'ing her and starting her on cereal so soon... it's very often recommended that nursing babies don't start solids until they're 6-8 months old at the youngest. Since your siggy said that she's extremely fussy, keep in mind that this young, the cereal may actually make her more fussy, especially since you're giving her too much cereal per milk in your TB per ounce of milk ratio (which is a choking hazard, as well as nearly impossible to digest).

EDITED: Since the OP has a thin skin, my sources come from a pediatrician who is on the AAP board as well as extensive research of my own. My 2 cents wasn't appreciated by the OP but it IS correct. The directions on the box are for babies that are older than 4 months. It's also a fact that many nursing coaches will advise nursing mothers to hold off on solids until the baby is at least 6-8 months old. That's also an advisement of the AAP.

Obviously I'm not stupid, and whatever you end up feeding your baby and when is up to you... but to discount someone's heartfelt advice that they're offering out of the kindness of their heart and their 3X plus experience and child education is rude.

Hi K.,
My son is 6 months and you will laugh when you hear when he started nibbling on solids. He was 2 ½ when he had a bit of home made whip cream and suckled on water melon, and when he was 4 mon. he ate all fruits and cereal in the morning, I even would make my own baby food b/c I don’t like the things they use in the baby food to keep it fresh. I asked the older ladies when they started with solids, and all of them told me as soon as they see that the baby shows interest in it they start. So right now I feed my son even the food I make for my self. I bought a small blender and I put about 5 spoons of the food and blend it. He newer had a problem with it, he is not over his weight limit and he newer got any allergies or sick from any of the food. He even shows interest in feeding himself. I always have to have 2 spoons when I feed him, he holds on and mommy the other one. It is so funny to see him hold the spoon and bring his mouth towards it instead other way around. If your daughter wants more give it to her. She will not stop breast feeding because of it.
Good luck,
A. R.

I think this is one where you can listen to your own instincts. If you feel like she needs more than give her more. It doesn't hurt to try more if she is handling what she is already getting well (by well I mean no allergic reaction or no hard poops/no poops etc) Keep in mind that you should be introing it slowly and she has only been on it for a little while. Also, it's going to give a different feel in her mouth throat and tummy - so maybe she needs to nurse afterward to wash it down?

Good luck
