A friend of mine is in need of a babysitter for her 10 year old daughter 3x/week for 1 1/2hrs each day. I will have to drive 5 miles from my house to pick her up from school, my friend will pick her up from my house.

I have no idea what to charge, she's asking me how much I want. What would you pay/charge for this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm going to ask for $37. That's a nice chunk of change for me to just put away in the bank every week (I know, I'm low maintenance, huh? lol) Gas is above 3.50/gal here and I'll be driving 30 miles a week. That's two gallons of gas through city traffic in my minivan. And $10/day sounds fair, I'll include a good snack and here's hoping she gets along with my 10yo daughter ;)

This is actually really cool, I use to babysit her oldest daughter when she was a toddler, too (she's 18 or 19 now). We've lost touch through the years but she's one of those friends with whom I can just pick up where I left off. We always were able to work out babysitting money stuff without drama, so although I'm wary of babysitting other peoples' kids due to that factor alone, she's one I don't have to worry about. Which is great, because I need my own money again and I hate retail and working for other people.

Thank you for answering so quickly, and so many of you gave great comprehensive answers which were especially helpful.

After school care around here for 5 days a week (3 hrs a day) is $75 a week.
$30 or $35 (don't forget what you're spending on gas to fetch her - 10 mile round trip adds up) a week sounds reasonable to me.

The rate around here is $50-$60 a week for 5 days. So, I'd charge around $30/week for that.

I charge $10 a day per kid for before and after, but the kids walk to my house in the morning, stay for one hour, then they walk to my house after school and stay for an hour.

$5 an hour. I only do afterschool but I feed them snack & do homework with the kids. All homework is done, do I think that's a good deal. :)

In full time child care an after school child usually brings in about $11-$15 per day. You don't have them for more than a couple of hours. The most part of the money is for their after school snack since that is almost all that you do with them except transport them from school to the center.

So I think you should charge her less than $10 per day.

I pay 46$ per week, for 5 days a week, about 2-2 1/2 hrs per day. I'd say maybe 30-40 per week since you have to drive & pick her up (to help cover gas)

Round it off to $40. Thirty seven is not a good solid number. You are not JC Penney.
