How to Make Crayons from Old Crayons

I think it's basic melting and just put the crayons in an oven on low heat or a double-broiler. You can even put them in fun molds as well. I think you would need to use a non-stick spray or grease so it won't stick to the pan. If you have a plastic mold you want to pour into like a candy mold, pour the melted wax and then put in the freezer to harden. They should pop out without issue. Of course, I wouldn't use them for food/candy after that.

I remember the stained glass was made by doing shavings between waxed paper and then using an iron to melt it. Of course, be sure to put a paper towel/newspaper above and below the wax paper so it doesn't melt onto your surface or the iron.

Crayola actually makes a machine that will melt them, reshape them, and wrap them into new crayons...my kids had one for the longest....it was about $16!! Really worth the money when you have little ones that like to break them...it just ran on a light bulb if I remember correctly....

I found this on line :
Every one has heard of melting their broken crayons in cupcake pans. This is simply an adaptation of that idea. All the neighbor children want to color with the special crayons.
This project is rated AVERAGE to do.

What You Need:
Broken crayons
Heavy paper cups
Candy molds
Microwave oven

How To Make It:
Remove all paper on the crayons.
Sort according to color.
Melt the crayons in the paper cups in the microwave.
Pour into the molds.
Hint: We hurried ours along by putting them into the freezer. We made fish, flowers, pumpkins, shells, and rabbits.

and as far as stained glass..I have always just used the shavings between two pieces of wax paper, used a warm iron (putting a cloth or towel between)..to melt the shavings..when the paper cools, cut out shapes (I like hearts)..string dental floss through and hang from windows. :)

Funny that you ask. I just read about this in What to expect the toddler years. It talks about recycling bits of old crayons and how you can peel the paper off and gather together in a plastic bag. "Seal the bag and leave in the sun or in a baking dish placed in a just-warm oven until the crayons have softened. Mold the molten mass into balls and refrigerate till firm."

You can make "stained glass" by putting crayon shavings in between wax paper and ironing it.

There is also a really cool machine in which you put old crayons and it turns them into "paint." When I was student teaching in a Kindergarten class, they had it and the kids LOVED it. They all contributed old crayons throughout the year. It made very bright vivid paintings.
