Has anyone ever taken the herb, fenugreek, to increase your milk production. I am still producing a decent amount of milk, but my supply has dwindled a some. I'd like to hold off supplementing with formula as long as possible. Thanks in advance for the feedback!

Yes, I took Fenugreek seed tea, Organic Mother's Milk tea, I even took the Fenugreek capsules and Blessed Thystle capsules. For some reason none of this worked for me, so my last resort was the prescription Reglan. That worked for me, my daughter can't keep up with me. Hope this helps, M.

I've heard that drinking root beer helps milk production. My sister says that it definetly worked for her.

I took Fenugreek and it worked just fine for me. I also pumped and drank plenty of water, but taking the Fenugreek is what really gave me that extra boost. I was unsure about taking it in the beginning as well, but I met a great lactation consultant and she convinced me to give it a try. It worked! There is a great children's resale shop called Kangaroo Kids, the owner is also a lactation consultant and will answer any questions you may have. They also offer classes and have support groups for both moms and dads! It's a great place. Check out their website kangarookidsonline.com (I know it may not be in your area, but they will answer e-mail)
Hope this helps.

I have taken Fenugreek and it works AWESOME!! I got mastitis and had to take antibiotic and that caused my milk to decrees. I researched the herb and read great things about it. I am taking it again because I too feel like my supply was decreasing and I did not want to supplement with formula yet. Here is some information about Fenugreek that might help.
- Fenugreek seeds contain hormone precursors that increase milk supply. Scientists do not know for sure how this happens. Some believe it is possible because breasts are modified sweat glands, and fenugreek stimulates sweat production. It has been found that fenugreek can increase a nursing mother's milk supply within 24 to 72 hours after first taking the herb. Once an adequate level of milk production is reached, most women can discontinue the fenugreek and maintain the milk supply with adequate breast stimulation. Many women today take fenugreek in a pill form. Sweat and urine smells like maple syrup which is common and often a sign you have reached the right dose.
- Fenugreek is not right for everyone. The herb has caused aggravated asthma symptoms in some women and has lowered blood glucose levels in some women with diabetes.
I hope that helps! You can email me directly if you have any questions. Good Luck!

I think you should try oatmeal and drink tons of water, that's what worked for me. Also nurse as much as possible and pump afterwards or when you skip a nursing session. The more you nurse/pump the more you will produce. Keep in mind that herb like fenugreek are not regulated by the FDA, so you never really know what you're getting.

You should not use it if you have a history of certain food allergies, asthma, diabetes, migraines, high blood pressure... It can possibly cause tummy upset for not only you but baby as well. Just be careful... I don't always trust these herbs, it's best to do everything else you can to boost supply before turning to something like this.

I agree that you should only use a supplement as a last resort. I also agree with pumping after every feeding, but it might actually work better to pump about 30 min. - 1 hour before his regular feeding. You might think that there would not be enough milk for your sons feeding, but your body will supply the milk that he needs. Also, you have to be consistent - pump, nurse, pump, nurse.... This will get your supply up to where you want it and then you have to be consistant to keep it there. Also, remember to drink LOTS OF WATER, no caffine. Also make sure to eat your fresh fruits and veggies. It really is amazing how just a healthy diet can help you and your baby. I have also heard of using Brewer's Yeast to help milk supply, but have never used it, so I would be sure to talk to your lactation consultant first. Lastly, make sure and stay positive. Stress can also have a negative effect on your supply. I am still successfully nursing my 16 month old son. I plan to continue to nurse him until he is 2, unless he quits on his own before then. I can honestly say that nursing my children is the most amazing, wonderful, and fantastic experience ever. I love knowing the benefits that it has for them, and myself. And to be completely selfish, I love knowing that I am the only one that can do that for them. Sorry to be so long-winded, but this is a topic I could talk about for hours!!! I hope that this helps!! Good luck, and stay positive!!!!!

I took Fenugreek when my supply was going down after I did everything the lactation consultant and I could think of. She said it was find and recommended it, but first she recommended pumping after each nursing for just a bit to help the supply then if that didn't work....try the supplement. But first of all, I would just highly recommend contacting your hospitals lactation consultant and working with them before doing anything! Also, another good source for nursing information is www.breastfeeding.com. Good Luck!

I am also in the process of getting my supply up! I have tried the Mothers Milk tea and it works well. You can sweeten in with honey. It doesnt taste too bad. I have not tried the fenugreek. But I also plan to try pumping between feedings or at least after a feeding. Def contact your lactation consultant. Hope this all helps.

My OB GYN told me to take it when I told her I thought my milk supply was going down. She a good Dr and VERY popular it's hard to get in to see her if your not already a patient. So I wouldn't be concerned about taking it. I took it and it worked for me. Actually I'm going to start taking it again, I like to start freezing some milk...

All I did to keep my milk supply going, was to drink alot of water, eat healthy and NURSE NURSE NURSE. Nursing is the best way to keep your milk supply going, the more you NURSE, the better the milk supply. I never drank or took anything special. I nursed my son up until he was 16 1/2 mths.

Congrats and Good Luck

Sounds like we have the same type of guy. My husband is wonderful, hes a great DAD and HUSBAND

Drink lots of water. Do you pump? If so, increase your pumpings by 1 more a day. I had tons of milk and decided to decrease my pumpings to 3 a day then recently had to increase back to 4 b/c my supply was low.

I've had good results with just drinking Mother's Milk Tea. You can find it in your regular grocery store. HTH!
