Hello, my 8 month old daughter had one red spot under each eye-high up on the cheek-yesterday and when she woke up this morning they looked worse! They don't seem to be itchy or bothering her, but they look dry and they're very prominent on her skin. I thought she may have just been rubbing her eye or something yesterday, but if that were the case they should have gone away instead of looking worse this morning. I don't know what this is, I'm going to take her to see her doctor, but was wondering if anyone could offer any insight as to what this could be? Could it be eczema?

What can I do next?

It definitely could be eczema so taking her to see your doctor is a good idea. Most cases of eczema are a reaction to a food (other reactions include diaper rash, dark circles or puffiness under the eyes, irritability/excitability, etc). She could be reacting to a food you recently introduced or maybe something she has been eating for a while that has been slowly building. The most common food allergens are dairy, wheat, eggs, citrus, and soy. If you are nursing she could even be reacting to something you are eating. If the doctor diagnoses it as eczema there are lots of things that you can do to figure out what the cause of the problem is instead of just treating symptomatically with steroid cream (which is the usual prescription). Suppressing the symptoms just allows whatever is causing the problem to fester and ultimately lead to some other problem that is typically worse - like asthma. Please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions about non-steroidal ways of dealing with eczema (if that's what it turns out to be).

Could be exzema. My daughter got it when she was an infant - mostly in the creases of her skin, like her neck and armpits. She also got rashy around her cheeks and chin. Eczema is often caused by food allergies - in her case it was an allergy to the formula I was using the first time, so I switched to another one. And then when she was about 8 months old, it was the barley cereal. I had her on rice cereal with no problem for a month, then added in barley in order to avoid wheat, a common allergen - but in the end she tolerated the wheat just fine! It was easy to tell the cause was allergies because she also had diarrhea and horrible diaper rash with these foods. The good news is, they usually outgrow the eczema, so if you can isolate a food source that you recently introduced, you can eliminate it from her diet for a few months, then try it again later (or not). To treat it I used Eucerin products topically - Aquaphor (sp?) for washing and a thick creamy lotion for after the bath. When it got really bad I used over the counter hydrocortisone cream.

My daughter, 15 months had the same. People told us about eczema, creams... our first doctor trip we saw a different physician than usual and he said it was just strange, look for something that might be causing it. We looked at dryer sheets, teething medicine when she'd rub gum then eye... a month later it appeared again and our primary doctor gave us some medicine that cleared it up. He did discover a problem. So check with your doctor and keep an eye on it.

Although I think you should consult your doctor, two out of three of my kids have had eczema. It can pop up in strange place...not just behind the knees, bend of the elbows, etc. We recently started using Triple Cream behind my two year old's knees, twice a day to relieve the irritation. His spots do not seem to be itchy, but look red and irritated.
I hope this helps you! Hopefully your child will grow out of this, as my oldest did. Good luck. And just an FYI... Triple Paste (diaper cream) is an amazing as well. We only use this product as it is VERY affective!! I run a daycare and recommend it often.

Keep her out of the sun. If it doesnt go away , take her to a dermatologist. I was diagnosed ta 2 for Lupus and it started with a rash on my cheeks then joint pain. Soon i was on my way to stanford. You can never be too careful with your baby!
