My sister just had a baby a month ago. Her dumb BF waited too long to add the child to his insurance plan...he had 30 days and he just forgot. Anyhow, does anyone know of any type of insurance for a baby. Sooner Care? My sister didn't qualify for it when she was pregnant because she made a little too much BUT she can't afford insurance. Any help and information is appreciated.

What can I do next?

In arkansas it is arkids their are two programs arkids first and arkids II. The first is for low income the second is for middle income (has a co-pay) the co-pay is very small like 10.00 for an office visit.

In Louisiana we have medicaid for single mothers or low income families. It is pretty much based on how much you gross for the year. I am not sure about where you live. You would need to call maybe the local food stamp office and they could help. Insurance is expensive and probably no affordable.

Good Luck
Boyfriend or dad needs to get on the ball. You cannot forget when you become a parent on something so important.

I am not sure where she lives, but there are a few other options. As for immunizations, the health department can give those. There are many clinics that use a sliding scale based on her income for their services. There are also free clinics. She just needs to get the right information. If she lives in OKC, send me a message and let me know and I can give you some of their information. Open enrollment for most insurance companies is this month, so I am thinking it was not just an accident he forgot to put the baby on his insurance. Employers benifits are expensive when you add on a dependent. Also, BC/BS does have a child only plan. My daughter was on in for a couple years. They are pretty good, they cover the office visits, and the rest is a deductible (admissions, ER visits, etc...) Hope some of this information helps. There are resources out there, but people have to look for them.

If Sooner Care is anything like ARKids First, there are 2 plans, one that has no copay for people who make very little money, and one that requires a copay like all other insurance plans that is easier to qualify for. I would tell her to give it a shot and see how it goes. Right now, though, is open enrollment for most companies so he may still be able to get the baby on his insurance soon.

Tell your sister to call the BF employer's personnel departmente and find out about the window of opportunity to add a dependent. She can tell the personnel assistant that she and "name?" had a baby on (date). Ask what they need to get the baby added to the coverage? I have worked in Personnel for many years and never heard about the 30 day "sign up or loose it" for insurance. He should be able to add a legal dependent any time. If not, get an attorney and he'll have to pay for medical expenses out of pocket because of his stupidity. You can usually find free legal counsel by asking around (check your local legal association or yellow pages). Good luck! Also, you local health department will provide immunizations and check-ups.

his employer should be able to make the allowance, or Findout when their next open enrollment date is and then he can put the baby on his plan. Are you certain cost isn't the problem? When you add a baby then you go to family coverage and most employers don't cover that , so your monthly premiums go up. As for insurance for the baby, If she still doesn't qualify for soonercare, I would try Blue Cross/Blue Shield, I know a couple of people who have purchased individual policies their for their kids that where less expensive than their company insurance. Good luck and congrat on the baby.

I believe every state now has some kind of children's health insurance program, or CHIP. It's a government program specifially for children whose parents can't afford insurance, and is supposed to cover families who make too much to qualify for medicaid. I think you contact your local health department to ask about it. She could probably also ask a pediatrician's office.

Now I know in the state that I live in(Alabama) there should be NO child without ins.. You either carry them on ur ins. or we of course have medicaid(low income families) and then if u dont quaify for Medicaid they have something called All Kids...which is a form of BCBS, just u pay a low yearly ded.. like 50.00 or so. Anyways, it is more for the ppl who get denied medicaid but cant afford ins otherwise. I would tell her to check deeper into it! Call her health department and they might can give yall a start.

If you are in alabama, try for all kids, it only covers working families, if you add your child to your husbands plan it might not be as cheap as you thing, you are switched over to a family plan which most companies don't pay for.

he should still be able to add a dependent to insurance. the way it worked for me was my newborn was covered under my insurance for 30 days, during which time i was supposed to have her added to my insurance. if i didn't add her right away then her coverage would lapse but that didn't mean i couldn't add her at a later time. he needs to talk to HR at his company.

I live in oklahoma and my son was on soonercare- so if she lives there and doesn't qualify for sooner care tell her to try insure oklahoma.. it is a insurance provider for people who cannot get it through their employer and you pay based on your salary. Takes around 90 days to become effective though I believe. Best of luck to her!

I am pretty sure that All Kids will accept the baby. Just as long as the mother does not make over I think 50,000 a year the baby should be able to recive it. It is for infants to 18 years old . The regerstraion fee was 50.00 about 6 years ago. Good Luck!(This is for Alabama residents only)----A.

If he hasn't done it already, have him call his insurance company or contact the benefit office at his work. Sometimes, if you explain the situation, they have the discretion to allow a late enrollment. We had a similar situation, and they allowed it.

I had Medicaid while I was pregnant. See if she qualifies for that.

Also, see if she qualifies for WIC. It was a BIG help until I got a better job.

If she or the baby have a CDIB card from any Indian tribe she can get health services at an Indian health facility. Other than that she could maybe cut down on her income or maybe after her "dumb BF" pays for checkups and shots for a year he'll remember the insurance next time. Actually, there is the county health department for shots and possibly check ups and there is a good samaritan type of service in Muskogee. I'm not sure how to find out about that service.
