Kids Take off Their Diapers

My twins turned two in February, we switched them to a full size bed so they could sleep together. Well it is hard enough to get them to sleep without playing around but lately when I check in they have their pants and diapers off. They actually take their diapers off frequently without being put to bed. They do it while they are playing too. Does anyone else have this problem? I am going to add to this that it isn't just when they are sleeping and I don't think it has to do with them being twin

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So i noticed the tighter the sleeping pants or pants in general he can't just slip them off. When they don't see each other doing it we don't have an issue.

I have a 2 1/2 year old boy. We also use duct tape for the diaper issue but not on his diapers. I buy the one piece pjs with the zipper. I tape the zipper down with duct tape so he can't get in. Some nights he works REALLY hard to get it off, so I have to put tape in several places on the zipper - but it works pretty well. Good Luck!

I have twins and went through this as well. I see that duct tape was mentioned and it worked for us too. Good luck!

It sounds to me like they are ready for potty training which is the perfect age to start them. I would have started them a little bit earlier. They are taking off there diaper due to they don't like the feeling of being wet or having BM's. I would start potty training them the longer you wait the hard it gets. Once you start you can't stop. I have two kids and I have started them right after they turned 16 months old. They picked it up just fine. This process does take a couple of weeks to do though so it isn't going to be easy once you start. My son took like 3 weeks to potty train. This is what I did for the over night deal. I would put him to bed at 8:30pm and then go in and get him up and take him potty at like 10:00pm and set my alarm for every two hours so that they get used to getting up in the middle of the night to go. It works though. Trust me. Well good luck with everything and let me know if you have any questions I am always here.

My twin boys are now 9... and I have great news for you: it DOES get easier... eventually! LOL! The diaper on backwards worked great for me. I never cut the feet off the jammies and put them on backwards, because I remember my mom cutting the feet off my jammies when they would get a little hole in the feet... and I totally remember that NOT being comfy! Plus, my boys would just undress each other. I would definitely start putting the diapers on backwards, or find some solution fast, because I had 3 incidences when my twins were about your twins' age... not only did they take off their diapers, but they did it when they pooped and smeared it all over their room and each other. NOT FUN!

Best of luck to you!

Another "duct tape" advocate. My brother has twin boys and they did the same thing. It really does work ! For Christmas & the twins birthday, as a silly joke, gave them duct tape as gifts. So funny ! Good luck and happy duct taping.....

You don't have to have twins to have strippers. Some kids do this & some don't. Gray tape {duct tape} will usually keep the diapers on them during this phase.

First of all i would suggest twin beds instead of the full
size bed. Next, if they are two, it might be time to start
potty training them. Have a regular bedtime ritual and let
them know it is time to go to sleep-not play.
I hope this helps.

Oh, I feel your pain!! My twins boys will be 3 in May and they have done this soooo many times I have lost count...along with smearing it EVERYWHERE. I tried the onesies, and they figured out how to get those undone. So, I resorted to duct tape!! At first it was just a little across the pull tabs, but they soon got that off. So, then I started taping it clear around them and the tab was left in the back. It is the only thing that worked. And it worked so well, that now all I have to do is threaten to put duct tape on their diapers and they leave them alone. Mine are also potty trained during the day, but not at night. So one other thing that I have done recently is put a pair of underwear over top of the diapers and they seem to leave the diaper alone then because they feel like big boys. Good luck!! I love my boys to death, but they sure can be a challenge. :-)

I understand the desire to keep the bond between the twins, but at the same time, you may need to resort to putting them in separate beds and possibly separate rooms. They might not like it, but it would beat the mess.

Hi S.,
I have twins who turned 2 in February. They started taking their diapers off in bed at about 18 months (poopy diapers!). We had to go back to keeping onsies on (its hard to find 24 month onsies though) all the time. They've been able to unbutton the onsies a few times, and they've managed ot pull the diaper right out of the buttoned-up onsie, but it works 90% of the time. They get each other into trouble!! but monkey-see monkey-do will always be a factor with the two of them. Good luck!

My son tried that a few times...I would try putting a onesie on them, or buying some pajamas that snap the bottoms and tops together. Good luck!

Not sure why, but my first son did that too! I couldn't figure out why and that was even more frustrating to me! Now my second son, he doesn't do it at all. And he is two years old.
My only suggestion that seemed to help out a little bit for me was that we put the bigger 24-month onesies on him and usually pants too and just checked on him a lot!
Good luck!

o let me tell ya, my son, takes his diaper off all the time and then wipes poop on walls. we finally had to put duck tape around his diapers at night. and also you can put there sleepers on backward and zip them up the back. only way to keep him from doing this. after cleaning poop up i finally figures these things out. good luck to ya

Put the diapers on backwards and the pants on backwards. They really don't feel the difference that much and it confuses them so much they cant figure out how to take them off! If the PJ pants are just pull down you can try pinning the pants to the diaper but make sure they are safety pins don't come open!

To be honest with you, you don't have to have multiples for them to take off diapers. When my oldest son (now 5)was 14 months old, he started taking his diapers off. He smeared it everywhere. I actually threw away the sheet in his crib (yes, he was still in a crib). I tried everything!!!!!! Duct tape around the whole diaper was the only thing that worked (until he figured out all he had to do was put his hand down in the diaper). Now that is a whole other story. Good luck!! I feel for you!! I don't think any of us like to clean up those messes.

I have twins too, but they are only 8 months old. I am in mothers of multiples, and they have already discussed this little trick - cut the feet off of sleepers and put the sleepers on backwards. They can't reach the snaps or zipper. One of the moms said her triplets would unsnap each others' sleepers so it did not work for her. Gotta love those creative little minds : )

It's probably a phase. My kids tend to think it's funny to run around with no clothes on or just a t-shirt.

I occassionally tell my kids that they can either put on underwear or take a bath. Being naked means they must want to take a bath, so then I start to run bath water. They usually run to put on clothes. Not sure why because they have tons of fun taking a bath.

I'm in the middle if this right now!! I'm so sick and tired of it too and the problem I've found with twins and full pjs on backwards, at least for mine, is they will help each other get undressed. Nothing seems to work. For a while we did the full pjs with the zipper safety pinned up so they couldn't undo them and that worked until we stopped. They were good for a while bit have started again with even more insistence on doing this.

I had this problem with my niece who I take care of. We used the one piece pajamas that zip up and put them on her backwards. This was after trying everything else - onesies and snap together jammies were a joke to her, as was duct tape, packing tape, etc. Once we put those jammies on her backwards it was over!

Hello, S.! I am the mother of 2 1/2 year old twin boys. I have the EXACT same situation as you, even down to them sleeping in a full size bed together! And they don't sleep at naptime because they play around, and they always have their diaper and pants off when I check on them. BIG mess. My doctor recommended duct tape, and it works GREAT. We call it their "belt," and now they won't go to bed without it. They love to have their "belt" on just like daddy wears. Just put their "belt" (we use blue duct tape, it's fun for them, and we split it down the middle to make it more narrow) along the top of their diaper. Put it tight (but not too tight), and they cannot get it off. Now this hasn't helped my boys to sleep any better, but at least their diapers are on when I check on them! Hope this helps. Please feel free to email me at ____@____.com, I don't know many other parents of multiples and it sounds like ours are in the same stages and age!
