Leaky Diapers on a 6 Day Old!

I use bumgenius cloth diapers (the one-size). www.bumgenius.com from www.cottonbabies.com
They are AWESOME. I have never had a leak so far--I have a 4 month old. They have strong gussets around the legs which hug the body.
Excellent investment since over the long run you save a ton of money over disposables, and you also keep a lot of trash out of the landfill. I think it takes something like 500 years for a disposable diaper to biodegrade, unless you get the expensive ones from Whole Foods. And they can be used for the next kid and the next, or resold (these have excellent resale value). Much easier than old fashioned cloth diapers---these velcro, go on and off like disposables, and go straight in the washer and dryer.

I suggest you try different brands until you find the one that works. Different brands work best on different babies. I started with Pampers, but my son's diaper would leak out the top back..so frustrating! I found that huggies worked better for him.

I had similar problems. I found that the Pampers Swaddlers size Newborn worked the best! Good luck - I hear that all diapers fit differently on different babies. I would also go with the blanket idea to save on extra laundry for the momma.

My 10 week old was 7 lbs 6 oz at birth and the Pampers newborn size worked the best for him. (His older brother was 5 lbs 15 oz at birth and the Pampers preemies were perfect). Having said that, we still had some leaks for about the first two weeks, then suddenly, they stopped. Maybe it has to do with the amount of c*** on their thighs ;-)

I too have a newborn son he is 3 weeks old and weighed 7 lbs. at birth. I am using pampers newborn diapers. I am breastfeeding and the poopy ones are a little runny. I am happy with these diapers-- one word of wisdom make sure to point his little boy part down--My husband and I finally realized after 2-3 wet otfits that that was our problem. Hope this helps

I loved the Pampers line up of swaddlers and cruisers until my son turned about 12 months, then we switched to huggies.
he never had a blow out with the pampers swaddlers, and he was a healthy eater and was born at almost 10 lbs. so needless to say his diapers were nasty. just buy the little packages of all brands and experiment... until then I recommend buying the lap pads, and use them while you feed and lay them under him while he sleeps so it doesn't ruin the sheets or mattress. I think you can get a pack of 2 or 3 at babies r us for 8 bucks and they are washable and are awesome!! Good luck!!

My daughter is now 2 months old and I had the same problem and I found it was mainly because I was using the Huggies newborn diapers they gave me at the hospital. As soon as I finished those and started using Pampers newborn they seemed to keep it in. After that the Pampers size one worked well. Even now I had used some Huggies on her because someone had given me a package, the size one which by weight she is almost too big for still leaked everywhere. The Parent's Choice brand at Wal-Mart work pretty good once they get a little bigger, better then Huggies and a lot cheaper, if that's a consideration. But really I've always been told the Pampers Swaddlers and Cruisers are best. The Pampers Baby Dry are not as good, just Swaddlers and Cruisers.

Try another brand or go to the in between diaper. The newborn size instead of the preemie or size 1. If you want to still have the 1's you can fold the top to where they fit better. Goog luck.

I think the cloth diapers are the way to go. I used to use them and you can fold them all different ways, and I had a premie and you can fold them to fit one that little.

First I would say try different types of diapers.Like huggies leaked on my son and pampers didnt but the little girl I babysit is the exact oppisite.Different brands fit differently.AlsoYou said it was a boy so make sure that his litttle wee-wee is pointing down when you put the diaper on.i no my son would squirt out the top of the diaper if I didnt make sure it was pointed down.My son was 7lbs 7oz and he wore preemie diapers for a while.Definitly invest in the more expensive diapers because they make up for the price difference.Because they have less leaks and u use less diapers.Good luck and if all else fails you can put two disposable diapers on and when you go to change him the next time if the diaper on the top is still dry you just use it and throw the one unerneath away.

First of all, congrats on the new grandchild. It could possibly be the diaper brand. I have tried different diaper brands mainly I was doing that for the price. The diaper that I found works for me is Luvs. I absolutely love them. Huggies are also great, but not in my budget. Try switching diapers until you find one that works. Pampers newborn swaddlers are awesome for newborns. I never had any problems with those. Good Luck!

This normal,same thing happened to me, tried every diaper and nothing worked. If you have tried every brand, and nothing has worked, see if Babiesrus has those plastic underwear, it's plastic on the outside, and cloth on the inside, look at Super Walmart, and Target. Blessings!

What kind of diapers are you using? We've found that for my breastfed daughter, the only diaper out there that absorbs her runny poop fast enough to minimize leaks is Pampers Swaddlers. Every other kind just doesn't cut it. They have a "newborn" size that we used when she was first born (she was 7 lbs), and we had to cross the tabs because her little waist was so tiny.

Beyond that, there are diaper covers that are normally put on over cloth diapers to prevent leaks & wicking, and I'm sure they'd be helpful for your grandson, too. I personally love Bummis covers. AHHAAHAHHAHA OH MAn does this bring back memories! By nursing I believe you mean breastfeeding right?
WHen I nursed my son the same thing happened! I swear everytime I would feed him his rear exploded! There were even times that almost none hit the diaper. NONE! HOw is that even possible??

I never quite figured it out myself to tell you the truth. I just put on his diapers as snug as I could without hurting him and put a towel around his butt just in case. IN any case let her know she is not alone and it will pass the older he gets. Mine is 15 now!

Pampers Newborn (not Size 1) are awesome. Soft and snug and non-marking. Worth it for those first couple weeks!

Use pampers! Make sure the elastic around the legs is out and also the tape on top is snug so there is no opening for the tee tee to come out the top.

Pampers swaddlers, I breastfed my little ones and tried all different diapers & the pampers swaddlers worked best to absorb the runny poop quickly.

Would it help to put some old-fashioned plastic pants over his disposable diaper? If you can get them small enough to be snug around his little legs, it might help keep the mess from getting all over.

Don't know what brand she's using, but we found (as did a lot of our friends) that Pampers hold the stuff better, especially at younger ages.

Pampers makes a newborn size "N"

my son was the same way - but just with pee - no matter how we positioned his little thing - pee would soak his clothes and bypass the diaper completely. We had the best luck with LUVS (do they still make those??) and he did outgrow it after a few weeks!!!!

I had the same problem with my 3 1/2 yr old when he was born. I had to switch to Huggies and it made a big difference.

every baby is different. sounds like you just haven't found the right brand. my friends & I all had TERRIBLE luck with the pampers swaddlers and blow-outs, while a lot of your responses say they do well with them. huggies, pampers & luvs are the only brands i would bother with- i tried all of them & these are the only ones i like. of course, pampers & huggies have different styles wthin the brand.
first off, besides pointing his little thing down be sure you are opening up the elastic around the legs, and put that diaper on TIGHT. you won't hurt him if you have the one with the little cut-out notch! he certainly seems to weigh enough to be in newborn diapers- the huggies were the best for our baby. and i have always used a recieving blanket on my lap-- still do at 6 months for the spit-ups, etc. saved a lot of clothes!

i have a 5 week old son who was 7 lbs. 9 oz. at birth (so i didn't have time to read all of the responses). try pampers swaddlers in a size newborn. make sure his little pee-pee is pointed down when the diaper is closed. also, make sure the diaper ruffles around the legs are pulled out (exposed). lastly, the diaper should be pulled almost tight. if it is loose at all, the poop can shoot up and out the back (aka, a blowout). i've found that the pampers swaddlers do the best to prevent leaks since the tabs have a lot of elastic stretch.

Hi, P., and congratulations on your new grandson! I have four little ones and definitely understand the frustration with leaky diapers, especially when they are so new. What I found was that first off, I would absolutely use no diaper other than Pampers...the stretchy ones, not the more plasticy variety. I think the less fabric like Pampers are the Baby Dry. They work good, too, but I would definitely suggest the other. I think the bigger ones are called Custom Fit Cruisers, but for newborns, I think they are just "Newborn" or "NB" but they may say Custom Fit, as well. With each child, I tried other diapers, usually samples that I had been given, and never had great luck with any others. I found that even Huggies did not fit well, especially with the tiny legs and bottoms of newborns.

The other thing that I found was that if somebody was leaky, it usually meant they needed a bigger diaper, rather than the opposite. I know the bigger diaper may seem like it is just huge on that little thing, but I found that when they were put on properly (at this age the tabs were pulled tight enough to touch or almost touch in the front) covering more surface area was the most important, especially with those nice newborn breast-fed baby diapers that come every with every feeding. :-) I hope this helps, and enjoy that new little blessing!!!

I see you have gotten a lot of responses, I have a different opinion.

We are proud parents of 4 children, and in the early days/weeks - NO diaper worked properly and we had leakage issues!!!

When babies are born they have that adorable big belly and skinny little legs with a tiny, tiny bottom - frankly, no diapers fit well until their cord falls off and they fill our a little bit! They're bodies aren't "born" to fit diapers :)

Once his cord falls off and he fills out a little, you'll find that you get a better fit on the diapers (no matter the brand - I have no diaper brand loyalty, we have used them all and they all work more or less the same) and the leak issues will stop.

Until then, I suggest using lap pads in his cribs, or like you mentioned - using a towel during feedings to catch any leakage.

Get the "N" size, it's between preemie and size 1. But honestly, I had this problem with both of my kids for about the first 2 weeks, EVERY diaper change was also an outfit change. Also, get some snug fitting(preemie sized) onesies, that will help to hold the diaper in place. I have another baby due in a few weeks, and I fully expect to have the same issues out of her for a couple of weeks. This too shall pass!

I have mixed feelings about the diaper brands. When my daughter was first born we only used Pampers Swaddlers and didn't really ever have any leaks. Later we started switching between the Huggies and Pampers and ended up using Luvs. Now that is all I put her in. I really wish I would have tried them when she was a newborn, but I can tell you now as a 1 year old she never has any leaks with the Luvs. I hope this helps some.

You might try the Newborn size Swaddlers. I found the Swaddlers by Pampers to be the best at that age and size.

I had this problem with my 1st son and I noticed that his privates were pointing up instead of down in the pamper. Maybe this is all it is and not the size of the pamper.

When my oldest son was a baby- this was many years ago... I used cloth diapers, and it was just when disposable diapers were coming out... they used to make these disposable inserts you could put in the diapers to make them more absorbant. Not sure if they still do not now. Perhaps what she may want to do until he grows some, is put cloth diapers on him- they do still make the disposable blue liners that you can easily clean up solid messes with.

Or using rubber pants over the diaper... but then there will still be the mess to clean up one way or the other.

Perhaps when she is feeding him, she can try to keep him so his bottom is down and more flat, instead of just cradling him really close while he nurses... his head will turn toward the breast... just wrap his lower body in a towel, just in case.

I used Swaddlers Newborn diapers. They seemed to be the only ones that worked. I love them! They go up to size 2 (12-18lbs).

I ran into the same problem with my son! It was brand of diapers I was using. I would try a different brand. I didn't like Pampers, but they worked best on my boy...

I'm not sure what brand you are using, but I had no luck with Pampers on my little guy! I switched to Huggies and we did great! Also, it seems silly, but make sure you open the sides up, we also figured that out the hard way.

I am so many years past this problem; however, I remember the same fun. Try different brands of diapers. However...we solved the problem by going UP a size and folding the waist of the diapers down so the legs of the diaper are still close to the body. This gave more room to 'catch'. Otherwise, there is less of a diaper and it's closer to the skin. The result is our little explosive babies produce faster than the diaper can absorb. This worked for us and I certainly hope it will work for you.

I had this same exact problem with my son when he was a few days old. I was using Huggies at the time and I was using the ones with the cut-out for the umbilical stump. I switched to pampers swaddlers in the the next size up, with no cut-out for the stump and this solved my problem!!

If by chance you are using Huggies.....well, that seems to be a problem with baby boys. Pampers are the best by far. A "Nana" of 7 grandbabies!

They make newborn diapers, not as big as size ones but bigger than premie. Huggies make some (which I used with all six kids) and some people have said Pampers swadlers were good for them but I had better luck with the huggies.

One you need to make sure his little willie is pointed down when you diaper him otherwise it will ALWAYS leak not matter what. Second, make sure that when he is diapered that the elastic inside leg seam of the diapers is adjusted to help prevent leaks.

Sometimes with my kids, especially my oldest he just had super sonic poo and no matter what it would shoot up his back side. Carry a second set of clothes, invest in Shout and when al else fails....double diaper!!!!!!!!!!

I hope this helps even a little, though I haven't read all the responses... We are on our 6th child. Gabriel is now 8 months old. He was a preemie, as well as 3 of the other children... My best diaper I found was Pampers Newborn, not Preemie, the preemie was still a little big... The second thing I am going to suggest is this and I feel weird saying it, but... Make sure his little pee pee points downward every time you put his diaper on... It makes sense if you think about it although it seems strange, but Gabe's doctor told me to do this and it was exactly what we needed... Yes, sounds strange but as I would wipe Gabe for the last time, I would wipe down then point it downward. Otherwise, when he goes, it goes straight up and doesn't catch in the diaper, but around this waist to the back of the waist... I truly hope we all have been able to help you... Had the same problem with both of my kids. With my daughter I went through every kind of diaper there was and nothing would keep her pee or blowouts contained. so I just stuck with the wal mart brand diapers because they were the cheapest. With my son, I tried a couple of different kinds of diapers and he had sensitive skin so we had to stick with wal mart brand. I will tell you with my son, at a very early age, meaning 3 or 4 mos. old I had to put him in the nighttime diapers at night because obviously boys pee straight up and he would wake up soaked all over his belly. Those diapers really seemed to help at night time especially.
I would just wrap a towel around him when mom is feeding him, that's what I did with my daughter. The plastic diapers don't help because they don't fit them very well.

I think you will have to try a variety of diapers before you find one that will work. For my preemie daughter, we found Pampers worked the best for her (and after trying out Luvs, Huggies, and Pampers).

Try a different brand. Try to point his pee pee down when you put on his diaper. I used swaddlers on my lttle ones then on my son I switched to Huggies.

Both my sons wore Huggies Newborns. I liked them the best.

Congrats on your grandson! I haven't read the other responses, so sorry if this is the same as what others have told you. There are a couple of things you can try...first I would try pointing his pee pee down when diapering. This seemed to help our boys to keep the pee going into the diaper instead of up or to the sides where there isn't as much diaper to absorb. Then I would try different brands of diapers. For us, Huggies always leaked but Pampers fit them better and we didn't have as many problems. I would try the newborn size and see if that helps too. There are these pads called lap pads or waterproof pads you can use to help keep you or anything you lay him on dry. We used these on their swings, bouncy seats, cribs, us...everywhere so if they spit up or leaked, then we weren't having to do laundry everyday! You can also try overnight diapers once he gets a little bigger (I think the start at sz. 1). Also, once his cord falls off that should help getting the diaper on him better since you won't have that area to work around. It will eventually get better as he gets a little bigger and the diapers fit him a little better. Hope you find something that will work! Good luck!

Oh, yeah! Exclusively breast fed babies have real problems with blow outs. Don't put a cloth diaper around a disposable, just switch to cloth! I was shocked when I found what they are putting in disposable diapers to begin with (including dioxin, the third most linked chemical to cancer!) Anyway, besides that they WORK so much better and with a diaper service, we used Green Baby Diaper Service,they are just as easy as disposables, better for the baby, and don't have near the blow out problems. Plus, with the service, they offer support, and you just put them on your porch and they pick them up and leave clean diapers. Cloth diapers are so much different than they used to be! In fact, they have All in Ones, that work exactly like disposables. I know moms that have switched to cloth just because of the blow out/leak issues of sposies.

Even if your city isn't listed, call her, because she is committed to helping anyone who wants to switch to cloth and they can most probably serve your area. It is only $25 per week ($100 per month), so the cost is about the same or maybe less than disposables! Plus, they let you try out a bunch of different covers, all in ones, etc to see what works best for baby. Buy your daughter a week and just see if it helps.

Conratulations on your new grandson!!! Certainly a lot of peeing and pooping is a good thing, at least you know he is eating well. I might suggest changing brands of diapers, making sure he is being changed alot (especially right before a feeding if that is when it is happening the most). then if it is still leaking i think wrapping a cloth diaper around sounds like a great idea. best of luck to you and your family!!

I had the same problem with my now 3 week old. We always used pamper swaddlers with my daughter so we used them on my son. Well he pees so much!!! No joke that he would wake up wet on his back from pee. Well we tried Huggies and they work perfectly no leakes. I just don't think the pampers could hold up. We use the newborns and they have a wetness indicator to that changes color when he pees. Awesome. Just make sure that you check the package real carefully if you want those sometimes it shows on the front and others on the side. We have gotten them at cvs and target. Good luck!

When we had our son the only diapers that we could find that didn't leak were the brand pampers swaddlers. I love these diapers!!

I would switch to a different brand of diaper. We just switched my son from Pampers Swaddlers to Huggie Newborn diapers and they have worked very well for us. We use the cuddleweave size 1 not the snug and dry kind. Hope this helps.

In my Experience...(I have 3 boys ages 5,4 & 2) all newborn diapers leak it's the poop not the diaper... its so explosive... I did prefer the pampers I like that weave the new born diapers have to grab hold of the poop...It does get better I would buy some plastic diaper covers and use those...I found mine at target...
