One of my sons classmates moms wants to take them to see the movie this weekend. From the commercials and previews in the theater it looks a little scary. Would you allow a 7 yr old to see it?

What can I do next?

The reviews I've been reading do not recommend it for young children. It's rated PG-13 and 7 yrs old is no where near enough to 13 in my mind. It's not worth the nightmares.

I would not let a seven year old see anything with Johnny Depp in it, he's no where near child friendly. Maybe the disney version (the old one) but not with Johnny Depp.

NO... the NEW movie out is very dark, have you ever read the original version (not disney version) book of Alice in Wonderland (. It is a very dark, and very adult book (highschoolers on up) and this is what the movie is pulling from.

This is not a disney movie... the originals that A LOT of the disney movies were taken from adult books BUT were made appropriate for children. Tim Burton is hold true to the original book and is making the movie for 13 years up!

I'd recommend you, as a parent, first watch Tim Burton's version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory first.

It was NOTHING like the original which was appropriate for children.

Tim Burton is a very dark director, and I'd honestly not recommend his movies for children. OK for adults if you like that kind of spin on classic stories, but I think he's not appropriate for most children.

My 11 yo is still creeped out by the head gear from Charlie & Chocolate Factory. This looks almost as creepy. Johnny Depp creeps me out: Willie Wonka, Corpse bride, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands, Ichabod Crane, Sweeny Todd the Demon Barber, Jack Sparrow. The red queen, Helena Bonham Carter, is also a bit freaky in her choice of parts (she's even a bit creepy walking the red carpet) even when she's not doing the unusual stuff with hubby, Tim Burton, Beatrix in the Harry Potter's and Marla in Fight Club.

If it's PG 13, I would pass until you see it.

I love, love, love Tim Burton and I cannot wait to see Alice in Wonderland. However, I would agree that it is not a children's movie. I think you would have to see it first. I also agree with the post to watch his version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, because nothing about Tim Burton's movies are light and fluffy. Maybe your son's classmates mom just wants to go see it, why don't your try to suggest a mom's night out or something?

there is a website called Common Sense Media and it rates moves on all cateogories. I always use this site when I'm not sure about movies for kids. But, I won't even be taking my 11 year olds to see this. Johnny Depp is kinda scary and twisted IMO.

my 7 year old daughter wants to see it and I'm not sure. It is not the same movie. Alice goes BACK to wonderland in this new movie. There is a white queen who is fighting with the red queen (the queen of hearts) If I understand the previews correctly. My daughter has already said the mad hatter scares her. I think I am going to watch it first and then decide. I think you should watch it first and decide based on your child. What is okay for my daughter may not be okay for her 8 year old friend who is scared of death, etc.

I took my 10 year old son to see it yesterday and he enjoyed it. I am not sure I would recommend it for a 7 year old. I am a huge fan of Tim Burton and it had his typical style. It is in my opinion darker than Charlie and the Choc Factory. There is violence in it (stabbing eyes, cutting off heads) that would bother some kids especially ones who aren't used to it or don't like it. The point of the movie would most likely go over her head, but could create some teachable moments centering around believing in yourself.

My town's (Grand Rapids, MI) local movie reporter was on the radio this morning and he said it was similar in creepiness to Charlie and the Chocolate factory. I would not allow my 7 year old to watch it until I saw it first, but I know my nephew would be. Of course, he is the kid who was taken to see Dark Knight in the theater. At 4 years old. Yeah.

I don't have a 7 year old, so I don't know your child's "level", but my gut would say no to a Tim Burton movie. Think of Edward Scissorhands, would you let your child see that? This seemed a bit more dark than that.

With Charlie and the Chocolate Factory my kids were creeped out more by the original Gene Wilder version than they were the Tim Burton one. The Gene Wilder one, if you don't remember, actually has an image of a chicken getting it's head cut off during the river run on the boat. The Tim Burton one is wild, fantastical and 'dark' but not nearly as creepy.

So for Alice, I haven't yet seen it, but I would probably say it's OK. Even Nightmare Before Christmas was dark, but not creepy.

Def go to review sites and see what they say too.

I took my 5.5 year old to see it last night. She ended up in my lap halfway through the movie, there are some creepy/scary parts. My daughter didn't really get the plot line, she did enjoy the movie overall though. She also loved charlie and the chocolate factory, her FAVORITE movie is nightmare before christmas and she loves the corpse bride too. I guess it depends on your child :)

I've told my 7yr old it's her choice. She's seen the trailers and has declared that it looks too scary and weird and she does NOT want to see it. However, I'm pretty sure that if her 9yr old sister and 12yr old brother go to see it with me (because I REALLy want to see it), she'll want to come along. This one is a bit tough, because, after all, it's Alice In Wonderland, but obviously being a Tim Burton movie, it's going to be dark and strange. She and I will discuss it, maybe watch the trailers online together and then I'll let her make her choice. I'm sure plenty of 7yr olds will watch this movie and many of them will love it and many will be freaked out by it. It depends on whether you think your child can handle it.

My daughter is 7 - she's not allowed to watch PG-13 movies until I watch them first and decide if it's ok or not. There are alot of PG-13 movies that she wants to see but is not allowed. As far as Alice & Wonderland goes, she doesn't want to see it anyway. I've asked her if she wants to see it and she said no way! She said the cat on the previews freaks her out. lol Also, I am so shocked that sooooo many people let their young children watch PG-13 movies! Maybe it's just me.

I'm taking a group of girls this weekend to see it. They parents feel their 10-12 year olds are mature enough. Kids today are watching "24", Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, and Lost. I don't allow my 12 yr old to watch those shows, but almost 99% of her class does. The Disney version was "dark" also, it's just that the music and cartoon version make people think it's okay for kids under 8.
