Nasonex

Has anyone used this on their children? I took my son to get his checkup on his ear tubes today. I mentioned to the Dr again that for over a year he has had serious congestion at night. I have ruled out allergies as Claritin did nothing for him. He said it still could be outdoor allergy related. I tried humidifiers, vaporizers, saline drops and so on. He ends up not sleeping well because he cannot sleep with his mouth closed like he likes to and wakes up with slobber all over his hair. I can tell he isn't getting restful sleep either with his behavior and the few times he has slept with me I can hear him wanting to close his mouth but his nose is too stuffed up. Anyway, the ENT said he had enlarged area on the front part of his nose that get smaller when he lays down. He suggested trying Nasonex before we proceed further allergy testing. I did remove dairy from his diet and that did nothing and I am a pro dairy advocate so I was relieved in that area.
I was curious if anyone has had this prescribed for their children and how they did on it?

What can I do next?

My 7 year old daughter has allergies. She has used both Flonase and Nasonex since she was 4 and they've both been fine. I also used Nasonex while pregnant with my 3rd. It worked very well for me and had no problems.

My DSs are both on it, both for about a year. They are 5 and 2 now. My 5 yo went on it for a cough that wouldn't quit. He also snored and just had bad sleep in general. After about 2 nights he had huge improvement. We also do nasal rinses with him, and those made a huge difference as well. After a week on Nasonex he thanked me for getting it for him because he wasn't so tired since his cough never bothered him any more. He had never complained about the cough. Our 2 yo is on it as he gets incredibly sick with even a simple cold. We're doing a lot of other things, but the Nasonex not only helped that, but it also got rid of his chronic ear infections. In fact, the ENT said he didn't want to see us back because he had quit it since we obviously didn't need to do surgery now. I haven't noticed any adverse side effects. Our 5 yo takes it very happily by himself and our 2yo does not fight it, although it did take him some time to adjust.

Do you have his bed elevated?? I don't think that it would hurt to get a second opinion. I have four kiddos (14--10--6--3) and the last three of them had really bad ear problems. It sounds like to me it wouldn't hurt to get his adnoids and tonsils removed. And what i learned with our kids is that acid reflux was a big problem with them. It sewlls all the cavities and if they get this at night time then it is hard to breathe. Try asking for them to scope the esophegus and check . It gets so frustrating!! Did the dr tell you to put ear plugs in when he takes a bath?? Or any time he is in water. And nothing but water to drink 2 hours before bed time. Nothing minty and no chocolate. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. YOU KNOW THAT HE NEEDS MORE ATTENTION THAN HE IS GETTING. SOMETIMES IT SEEMS LIKE THEY WANT YOU TO COME BACK AGAIN AND AGAIN FOR THAT $$. HE MAY NOT HAVE ALERGIES BUT A DECONGESTANT MAY HELP WITH THE SWELLING. GOD BLESS AND GOOD LUCK.

Hello, my 7 yr. old was put on Nasonex this summer because like you described sleeping for him was horrible and snoring was so loud. To tell you the truth I have seen a little bit of an improvement but no as much as i would of liked to see. When he talks to me know i can tell he is not as stuffy and he doesn't snore as loud but he is still having restless nights.

I haven't tried it on my kids, but I just so happen to start using it about 2months ago, and it is the ONLY thing that helped me with my chronic congestion. And I have tried EVERYTHING. I went almost 2 months being stuffed up once...But yes, this is your kiddo, so you may want to follow what you feel to do. Some kids DO have problems in the sinus areas and what not. And it wouldn't hurt to do further testing if that is what your instincts tell you. I have talked to moms who have put thier kids on the Nasonex, and they would rotate 3 weeks on, 3 weeks off. I went five weeks, and one week off, and now only have to use it about 2 or 3 times a week.
I would sleep with my head propped up too, and that helped me. I don't have to do that anymore, tho sometimes it is still a habit :). Good luck to you!

Have you ever tried Xlear? Its a saline based nasal spray with xylitol and has worked wonders for me personally as well as my little boy. http://www.xlear.com/ I have used nasonex (when he was very sick) but I know you are not supposed to use it for more than a couple of days because it has steroids and can be addictive. I realize your post is a couple of months old but thought this might help.

Can't say much about Nasonex, but I CAN say that just because Claritin didn't help that this rules out allergies! I have definitely found with allergies that some people respond better to certain medicines than others. Personally, Claritin doesn't do squat for me. You do kind of have to experiment with different meds. There are so many out there, and you just don't know from one person to the next. I happen to get good results from Allegra, while one of my friends does better with Zyrtec. (Again, does nothing for me.) Another thing to consider might be an air purifier for his room. They are kind of pricey, but the improved air quality in his room will probably help with allergies. We got a good one at Sear's. Good luck!

Don't rule out allergies just because the Claritin did not work. We have been through many allergy meds for my 8 year old. The thing that helped him the most with the stuffiness was having his adenoids removed with his last ear tube insertion. It was a tremendous difference. We still battle allergies, but at least he isn't snoring/drooling/waking as much.
He was placed on Nasonex last year..or maybe the year before. It worked beautifully except after about a week he started having uncontrollable diarhea (I never spell that right, sorry). We can no longer use it.

Hi D..

I've used this on my son. He is 8 now. There were no bad side effects that I could see. It helped his nose clear out a lot. He doesn't use it now because his allergies are pretty clear, but I'm sure I'll have to put him back on it at some point. I'd go for it and see if it helps. The other thing I do with my son is give him Singulair at night. It clears his nose and helps him sleep a lot better. Good Luck!
