Hello! My son (6 mo.) was just put on Neocate for complete milk protien allergies and I was wondering how you afford this stuff?! We do not qualify for federal programs, but we aren't wealthy either. Are there any other programs out there that will help? The price of the neocate is more than our whole food budget for a family of five!! Any advice? Thanks, S.

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

I have two suggestions. One may be easier than the other or neither may produce results.
My first advice is do you qualify for the WIC Proram? Do you know anything about WIC? I have worked for WIC for over 12 years and they will provide 2/3 of the formula for the first year with a documented medical reason and length of issuance.
If you have further questions regarding WIC feel free to email me a personal message. We often qualify as the working poor.

My second suggestion is.... Do you have medical insurance? Sometimes the insurance company will pay for the formula (good luck). It can be a very long tedious process but it may be worth looking into. The doctor again would need to fill out form documenting a medical reason why its needed and for how long.

Last but not least..... Call the local foood banks or salvation army. They might have some thta was donated. Though this is not a typical formula thta is used on most babies.

Has the pediatrician tryed Nutramigen, alimentum or progestamil? These are formula's thta are partially brocken down and easier to digest. They tend to be abouut $20.00 a can but I don't know what the neocate costs.

What are the symptoms and what other formula's has Varick tred or been on and for how long. To have a baby switch to such an extreme 6 months after having formula for thta long or were you breastfeeding? What other foods is the baby eating? What are the symptoms of the milk allergy?

I also moved here from Conneticut to Mesquite a little over 3 years. It is a complete change of lifestyle. I miss the tree's and foliage, but got enough snow for the next 7 years.

Feel free to write me back. Has the baby seen a pediatric gastroenterologist or a pediatric allergist? I know they have some in vegas.

Try asking your docotor if they have any samples available. If not, ask them for the number to the pharmacuidical company and see what suggestions they may have for you.

Hi there,
I would talk to your pediatrician. My son was put on an expensive formula to gain weight also. He had a lot of medical problems at birth. At the time we didnt qualify for any programs, so our pediatrician would order cases for us. We also went through the company itself. It was a lot cheaper to get it by the case through them.

Do you have insurance? Your health insurance should cover it because it is available through most pharmacies.

Give me a call and let's talk about your son’s condition. There may be another option.

S.,

You can sign up at the formula websites or call them and they will send you some coupons. I've also heard that if you can get your pediatrician to write a perscription, your insurance may cover some of it.

My 3 month old is intolerant to dairy, soy, eggs, caffeine and possibly wheat. Fortunately for me, I'm breastfeeding so I've been able to alter my diet and we are getting through it (I've also eliminated nuts and citrus.) My husband and our pediatric GI doctor keep asking me why I don't just change to formula and my answer is always "do you have any idea how much hypoallergenic formula costs?" Yikes.... I can't say that not being able eat a huge list of foods is much fun (basically at this point I'm down to meat, potatoes, rice, veggies, fruits and oatmeal and not much else) but I don't envy you at all in trying to figure out how to pay for the formula. I just broke my leg and I'm off work and my milk supply has really taken a hit but I'm trying to hang on!

I hope your son tolerates the neocate well. I have a friend who went that route and had a heck of a time. They eventually figured out that her son couldn't tolerate the corn syrup in the formula. I'm not sure what she ended up feeding him but I can ask if you have more problems.

Good luck to you! I hope your insurance will help.

T.
