Do you have any brand/style recommendations for a portable DVD player? We will have a loooong flight and hope that it can help entertain our 2 year old for at least some of the time.

Any kind as long as it's cheap because they take a beating! Also, if you buy it at a Target/K-Mart/Walmart...make sure to buy the extended warranty. We had one that petered out two years after I bought it. I called a number, and voila, they sent a postage paid envelope, I mailed it back, and they refunded the entire amount to buy a new one immediately. Super easy and worth the extra four bucks I paid when I bought it.

PS: Last time I traveld with a young one I brought a huge bag of gummies. My two year old swallowed gum so that wasn't an option for his ears and the de-pressurization. I bought big gummy worms and stuff to keep him chewing so they wouldn't get too plugged - it worked great. I had a huge bag of all different types (spiders, worms, octopus, martians, flowers, butterflies) on our last flight, and donated them to some parents that had a screaming kid. He stopped crying immediately, and the entire flight crew came up and thanked me when I got off the flight.

We have one that plays DVDs and also our iPod. It's much easier to carry a bunch of movies on our iPod than a bunch of DVDs.

Ours is Magnavox I think. So far it has been wonderful!

We had a Polaroid from Walmart (it was white, just for reference) that was dropped countless times while my son was using it, and it held up like a champ. And it was one of the less expensive ones.

I've never used the portable one's but we had one installed in our car and I tell everyone it's been a life saver! Our car trips (before dvd player) were a night mare at times, kids yelling, fighting and much more bored but as soon as we got it put in, car rides were quiet and peaceful! : )

Our 2 yr old LOVES Thomas the Train right now, Elmo, the Chipmunks & Toy Story. Just a few that you might want to check into before the flight.

Good luck and have a safe flight.

I don't think that brand really matters. I've had several and all have worked fine.

Most important features are long battery life, and an auto adapter. We had a Magnavox that had an auto hookup and it was a LIFESAVER.

We have a Sony portable DVD player and it works great. I love the flip/tilt/swivel screen on it. Works great for both the car and to take it out and use it other places. It's the second one we've owned - first one was a generic, cheaper brand and it broke after a couple of months.

I bought a Sony portable dvd player that has a six hour battery life. I bought it at Walmart but I think both Best Buy and Target had it to. Read the reviews online for them and find out about battery times, a lot are only around two hours. You may also be able to get replacement batteries for them so you could switch them out on the flight if you need to.
