Potty Training 2 Year Old. - Oxford,NY

I have decided to Potty Train my 2yr old boy. He has been getting terrible diaper rashes from the heat. Things are going surprisingly well. I have been allowing him to go comando. I am a stahm so it's possible. He has no accidents if he is bare butt. If I put underwear or training pants, I guess he relaxes and then just goes in his pants. He definitely needs more training time. My question is how do I transition him back to wearing clothes? I'm figuring it will all come in his own time.

You can only try but if he has accidents, he may just not be ready. You can use products on his butt...I use Arbonne's Diaper Rash cream and really helps. My 2 1/2 year old isn't ready and my older two boys were 3 1/2 and 3 before they were trained. 2 just seems kind of young unless he is the one telling you he's ready.

two ideas come to mind.

Boxer shorts not underware....can't poop in those :o) and / or
have him pick out special underware that he does not want to ruin
with pee or poop.

Are you taking him to the bathroom, or is he taking himself? If you are waiting for him to tell you he has to go, you may be waiting a long time. That is often the LAST step in the process. I'd suggest trying training pants (cloth only, not disposable) and take him to the toilet every hour. Don't ask if he has to or wants to go, just take him. He may not know how to let you know that he has to go or realize that he has to once he has clothes on.

Can't offer advice because I am in the same exact boat with my son only he is 3. I waited because I knew he was nowhere near ready and now he is doing great when not dressed but I need to transition him back to clothes as well. I bought some underwear but am not sure if its too soon. I'm also wondering how I can take him out. I'd love to take him to the park on this beautiful day but will it set us back?

I have a two year old who does the same thing when he's in training pants (disposable are a waste) or underwear and also does well when he's running around bare bottomed. I don't know if your son has expressed an interest in going to the bathroom or if this is something you're pushing but do realize that THEY, not us, control when they'll be potty trained. It's one of the few things that children this age can control. So if it's becoming a battle, prepare to lose.

With that said, if he's ready, I'd let him run around commando. Let him pee in the grass outside for extra fun. Put Cheerios in the toilet and let him aim at them. If he doesn't get it, no biggie. Just continue what you're doing or go back to diapers. If you go back to diapers, use a good quality one and change him frequently to help cut back on diaper rashes. Also make sure the doctor's taken a look at it. My son had a horrible diaper rash that turned out it was a yeast infection on his poor little bum.

I really wouldn't sweat it. Boys are often late bloomers when it comes to potty training. My older two were both around three and a half when they potty trained and had showed NO interest before then. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my two year old will stay interested but right now we're back in diapers because it's more an occasional game he enjoys now and then than "hey I'm ready to ditch the diapers, Mom." I'm ok with that, even though the little boy next door (only one month older) has already mastered it all. I'm not Super Mommy and I don't expect my son to be a superstar either. It'll happen long before I need to send him off to school and that's what really matters.

DO NOT put him back in diapers. He is fine. I have 3 boys that were all potty trained at or by their 2nd birthdays. (Ran around naked until they understood not to pee in their pants). Eventually he will just get it that he shouldn't go in his pants. You should (1) take him to the potty before you go anywhere, (2) stick an extra potty in you car for when you go out- you can show it to him, "see, here is your potty, so if you have to go, tell me." & (3) make sure you tell him every time you dress him that he is a big boy now and has to put his pee/poop in the potty. Also, have you tried getting him underwear with his favorite character on them? Don't pee on Bob the Builder! Oh, now you can't wear Bob because we have to wash him. Make sure you bring extra clothes when you go out & something to put down on a wet car seat. He will get it. Based on what you said, he already understands how to use the potty, so give him a bit more time on the rest. Good luck!

Buy him some fancy pence with the film characters he like and put the on him when he goes to bed, before putting him to bed remind him about his lovely pence eg ooh you have lovely power rangers pence and they a big strong boys jest like you. If he wets the bed the next day tell him never mind tomorrow power rangers will help him not wet the bed and if it keeps on try another corrector.

I can only speak from my experience but when my son was just shy of 2, I had a bunch of friends telling me how little "Johnny" and little "Susie" were "potty training". They would make them go on the potty and practice but their kids had never asked to potty train and had not shown their own interest in it. Their children "trained" for months.
My son was not very verbal and so I thought it might be a while before he trained but I had a younger one in diapers and was not in a big rush for him to train. One day he strung together probably his first sentence and told me that he wanted to wear underwear. I told him he had to go in the potty if he wanted to do that. He said he did and his potty training took no time at all - really, about 3 days and no accidents after a week. He still wore pull ups to bed for a long time after that. My point is, when they are truly ready, it should take no time at all. If it's taking month after month after month, then they probably aren't ready. My son is 14 now and trust me, they all learn to go. If they go when they're 1 or they train when they're 3, they all end up in the same place and this will have been just a blip on the radar.
I would probably just put him back in his clothes and when he's ready to train, he will let you know. He seems to have the idea of it now and how to control himself so I think it will be no time at all before he tells you he wants to go on the potty. Let him lead.
