My 3 1/2 year old son has been potty trainned since he was 19months old. How do you start to potty train through the night, and what age is normal to expect it?

What can I do next?

You really can't "train" night dryness. It's more of a physiological issue and ability of the bladder to hold it. When you have a dry diaper/pullup every morning for a week or two--his bladder is ready!

I agree with Denise- both my daughters really did this on their own. My first daughter didn't until she was nearly six, but my second night-time trained at 3. Most kids are potty trained during the day long before they can hold it at night.

You don't potty train at night. When he starts waking up dry more often than not, you can try putting him in underwear overnight. When he is able to wake up to use the bathroom during the night, he will. I wouldn't worry about this until he is 5 or 6 years old. Some kids take even longer.

the only thing that worked with both my kids (girl then boy) was putting them in underwear at night. Taking them potty in the middle of the night to try and putting them back to bed. We did that for about 3 weeks, taking longer and longer inbetween potty. They worked it out and stayed dry within a month.

Lots of wed bed pads inbetween, but it takes what it takes and its only temperary.

So many people say to leave on the pullups until they keep them dry. Maybe my kids are different because they would pee in them because they could. Once we got rid of them they did great!

Good luck!

I would try and have him go pee two times before bed. ( go pee, read a few books, then pee again) I have also been told to wake him one hour after he falls asleep and one hour before he wakes up. This teaches him it is ok to wake up in the middle of the night to go pee. Good luck!

When he wakes up dry for a week in a row, he's night time trained! Nothing to it. There's almost nothing you can do to speed it up, so just sit back and relax... it will happen eventually. To help, you can limit fluids before bedtime but that's about it. As info, my four year old daughters aren't yet night time trained, although one wakes up dry about half the time. They day time trained at just over 2 years old.

My son just turned 4 and night potty trained himself about a month or two ago. He is one that we had to let decide when he wanted to sleep in underwear instead of his pull-up. We encouraged him and praised him when he stayed dry. He got some m&m's with his breakfast if he woke up dry. :) We praised him for being a big, big boy.
My cousin and hubby would have their son go potty before bed, then before they went to bed (a couple hours later) they'd wake him up enough for him to go to the bathroom again and then right back to bed.

I agree with other posters - no set age and set training regimen. My son, just over 4, wore a pull-up for over a year at night. For the last month or so, he was dry every morning. The final clincher for us was that he woke up once or twice to tell us he had to go potty. We knew he was ready then! He's been in underwear at night for about 2 months, and doing great. Good luck!

Don't give him anything to drink one hour before bed. My four year old doesn't have accidents at night anymore because we cut back his drinking and make him pee before bed.

My son is 4 1/2 and he still wears a pull-up to bed. He gets a sticker on his calender for days he wakes up dry. He is doing a lot better with it. I would rather have him wear pull-ups than have to get up at night to change wet sheets, pjs, & undies plus cleaning the pee of the child. The doctor said between 6 and 8 is when most kids can stay dry every night. I figure when he is ready he is ready.
