Prefolds or Flats for Newborn?

I've been doing cloth since my son was born (once the meconium was passed into disposables, because it stains). I bought 12 kissaluvs fitted diapers. They were a little pricey, but I loved them SO MUCH. I also bought 12 prefolds and 3 BumGenius pockets. The pocket diapers were huge on him at first. He started wearing those around 3 months or so.

I used the basic fold with a snappi. My favorite covers are thristies and bummis whisper wrap.

WOW. congratulations! i too use dydee diaper service which is great and the prowrap diaper covers are awesome. the diaper service delivers and picks up. the only washing you'd do is your own diaper covers. i think i bought 6 covers for my son when he was first born. you can always put a wanted post on craigslist for the covers or try ebay too. i got a lot of 20 diaper covers for $40 once. good luck with your diaper search.

What about another kind of pocket diapers? I used both Fuzzi Bunz and Happy Heinys in extra small in the beginning. I still use the Fuzzi's and swear by them! We use the Bum Genius at night with the large insert, though. There is a website called www.jilliansdrawers.com where you get a sampler pack of different diapers for $10 to try. You can buy what you like or send them all back. That really helped me to decide. Congrats on your pregnancy!

I have used the bumGenius one size diapers since my baby was 1 week old (waited for the umbilical cord to come off), and although they are a little big and do go up high on the stomach, they still work great on infants, you just have to use the infant insert. My son was 7 lbs 12 oz when born, but we had some problems with feeding, and he was down to 7 lbs at two weeks, and we were still able to use them. He is now 5 months old, and about 14 lbs, and the velcro goes to almost the same point it did when he was born (he is really thin and long). Just wanted you to know that you can still use them on newborns.

We have been using a cloth diaper service since our daughter was born. Their website has folding instructions at http://dy-dee.com/html/Folding/folding.html that show you how to fold a prefold. We use the Proraps diaper covers that they (& other places) sell, so we don't need to use pins or a snappi. The covers, we think, hold in the poop better than disposables! Dy-Dee diaper service is somewhere around $20/week, so it might be more economical for you to use them until your new baby fits in the bumGenius you already own, instead of buying a lot more diapers. We are going to try a friend's bumGenius next week, so it's good to see that others like them as well.

Sorry, but your question made me laugh! I too "clothed" my boys (born 1989 and 1991) in an age when everybody else was disposable. I prefer flat diapers, it is easier to fold them to different sizes to make them fit. But I don't know how to write or tell you how to do, I could show you in a second. You need to find an old lady who can show you. My Mom was a housewife in the 50"s, anybody from that era should know. I also used an "all in one" (cloth with nylon cover and hook an loop closure" diaper called "Bumpkins" successfully. My only complaint about them was you could not bleach them, but they too have probably improved since my day.Bumpkins come in newborn sizes, or used to. I have seen them over the years in baby stores, but not recently. Good luck. B.

We used gDiapers. They're eco-friendly diapers (did you know that regular diapers take 500 years to biodegrade? I didn't and couldn't believe it). They're super cute, super easy to use and even more environmentally friendly than cloth diapers (because of the amount of washing needed for cloth). They are less likely to cause your baby diaper rash because they don't have all the bad chemicals in them. The outside portion is cloth and just velcros shut - they're THE best! You can learn all about them at www.gdiapers.com. They biodegrade in only 6 months and can even be flushed.

They are very friendly at the company as well and willing to answer any of your questions.

I used cloth diapers on my first few kid. If You make your own with a squate piece of flannel you sew the edges it makes a great diaper. Then, you hold one corner with one hand and with the other you bring one side over to the other until the point comes to a peak, then do the same to the other so it looks like a triangle. Then fold the top down to as small as needed. Then the point of the triangle you fold up to as small as needed. That it.
