Hi Mamas,

I know that antibiotics will lower the effectiveness of birth control pills, but do you know by how much???? I just realized that I have been on antibiotics for the last 2 weeks for an infection that I got after my surgery. But we didn't use back up methods of birth control-- i am on the pill. I have been really feeling sick in the mornings/afternoons and am wondering what the likelihood is that my birth control failed because of the antibiotics. Does anyone know??? I haven't had a period for 2 months--but that is due to the type of my bc pills--- 4 periods a year. Please help ladies!

Please note--- I love babies and would be fine if I am pregnant, but just want to know if anyone knows the probability that this happened because of the antibiotics......

Thank you!

Take a pregnancy test. It can definitely happen and being on birth control after you are pregnant can be detrimental to the fetus. Best wishes either way.

B/C isn't 100% to begin with, so the effectiveness is lowered even more. Take a test, give yourself a couple weeks, and take the test again. Use a back up method for the time being just in case. My 16 year old nephew is proof of this as is our friend's 12 year old son.

My best friend had gotten sick on her honeymoon. She was on the pill and was given antibiotics. She got pregnant as a result. I don't know the "percentage" but I DO know that you can get pregnant while on the pill and taking antibiotics. Your doctor should have told you this. I would take a pregnancy test if you think you might be.

I would ask the pharmacist. Some antibiotics are lower on the "affect bc" pole than others. But I had a pharmacist tell me that you should always use back protection as a just in case.

I don't know probabilities but I do know that two of my three babies were BC babies and the first one was due to antibiotics rendering my pill ineffective (or we were just really lucky to be that 1 %!).

Don't know the probablility but I know they always warn me if I am on an antibotic. I suggest you ask a pharmasicts for a more concrete estimate.

Can you take a pregnancy test so you can know before you keep taking your bc pills?

One of our good friends ended up pregnant at 18 because of antibiotics...she was taking The Pill, got a sinus infection, had to take antibiotics, and didn't realize what they could do...and boom, that was it.

When I was on The Pill, and had to take antibiotics, we always used condoms for back-up.

I would just take a home pregnancy test, or go see your doctor and get tested, and find out for sure, before you keep taking more pills.

Everyone's fertility is different.

Hubby and I ended up PG with number 3 after a single event when we lost a condom. It seems I am one of those "lucky" ones that get PG practically when he looks at me! LOL.

If you are concerned, take a test and see your doctor asap.

You wouldn't be feeling anything yet, if it was just in the last 2 weeks anyway. Generally, symptoms don't kick in until around 6 weeks along. If you *just* got pregnant, your body wouldn't register it for ahwile yet.

I'd call your doctor, or see what you find find online about drug interactions.

There are many times that I've been on antibiotics along with the pill and had no issues. So it's not all antibiotics. Just certain drug combinations.

I know several women that got pg while on the pill because of antibiotics.

I know that people have different 'systems' and some show symptoms right away and some never do other than weight gain all the way through. I'd suggest testing with an EPT, but it still wouldn't show if you were pg just yet. I agree with a previous poster that said to use back up until you test and know for sure. I'd say test in a week and again in 2wks.

No matter how many individual stories you might hear, there have been no scientific studies that prove that antibiotics lower the effectiveness of birth control pills, except in the case of the antibiotic used for Tuberculosis. Here is a statement from the Mayo Clinic:

You can always take a test to relieve any worry.
