I am 17 weeks pregnant and I have had horrible acne this whole pregnancy. I have zits all over my face and now I am getting them on my chest. My ob/gyn prescribed me a topical cream that isn't working. I also use Purpose cleanser and lotion (which isn't working either). I am really feeling pretty bad about my looks these days. I am constantly applying makeup to cover up these zits. Please if anyone knows of any suggestions that helped them....PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

What can I do next?

Hi Y.!!
I am and esthetician and I do know that its hormone related and cleansers that are over the counter tend to strip your skin of its natural pH. I use Dermalogica at the spa I work at and it is a great product!!! My advice to you would be to call a dermatologist or a skin care specialist that can lead you in the right direction.
Dermalogica doesn't strip your skin of its natural pH. Also try a mineral make up. Once with out Talc. A few good ones are Glo Minerals and bare Minerals. Glo minerals has green tea in it so it helps calm the skin and it feels great and gives a great coverage. Make sure you are washing your face morning and night religously and using a moisturizer for your skin type. If you want more information on these products, any of the web sites can help you. I hope it clears up for you. Its mainly hormonal and when all said and done you will have a beautiful baby and the worry of pregnancy acne will be a mer memory.

I have had the luck of having acne since I was a teen, and what I know is this much...

Do NOT wash your face with cleanser everyday, only on alternating days, otherwise your skin becomes too dry, and the oil glands will work overtime.

If you are using a washcloth on your face, use it once and then throw it in the wash. If you don't, the skin bacteria will sit on it and multiply, not exactly something you want.

Only wear makeup that says its 'non-comedogenic' that helps against clogging your pores. Maybe you can try mineral makeup for now?

DO NOT PICK AT YOUR SKIN...I cannot emphasize this enough, popping pimples upsets surrounding tissue, and often makes the pimple last longer AND causes scarring. Yuck.

My SIL had the same problem during her pregnancy. She used MURAD products. Don't use products with alcohol as this can exacerbate the issues. Don't wash your face/skin in hot water- same reason. I personally don't like Purpose cleanser. I find it to be extremely drying. I use DHC (dhccare.com) products. I prefer to use an oil to cleanse my face, and I also use oil on my skin at night. I used these types of products throughout my pregnancies and my skin was great. When I switched my skin care over to oil based skin cares my greasy t-zone went away, and the breakouts have ended too.

Ugh, I have the same problem! A lot of people recommended Cetaphil cleanser to me. It's helping - not 100% but things have gotten better. It might be nice to try since it is over the counter and not too expensive.

I feel your pain!

I struglled with this after my second preganancy and I relapse occasionally. No fun at all. I second all of the natural recommendations made above PLUS water. Lots of it. It won't cure it entirely, but it will ameliorate the effects of the hormones. Hugs to you!!

Yuck I had acne when pregnant with my son- and the only thing that helped any was avoiding drinking milk and a great natural cleanser- I think by Avalon Cosmetics or something similar...
Also I know it will be tough for a week or two- but stop putting make-up on top of the acne- it only blocks the pores from opening and clearing out.
It is true though what Emmy M said- your baby will take away all the unpleasant memories. :)
Congrats!

You may want to try Mary Kay's TimeWise Cleanser & Moisturizer for combo to oily skin. You need to watch the type of makeup you're using now too...Everything about your body is fluctuating right now and your pores are no exception. You need to have something that will actually get into the pores to help clean them out. If you don't have a consultant, I'll be more than happy to service you.
