Pregnant and Looking for Reviews on South Austin Hospital

I delivered at Seton Southwest and I highly recommend it. I haven't heard anything specific about the South Austin Hospital. But, in general, people I talked with said Seton Southwest is better. If you aren't too far along, maybe you could change doctors? I recommend Dr. Lisa Schneider at Hill Country OBGYN. I changed to her at 30 weeks and I was very glad I did.

I had my daughter there in Jan 2009 and they were WONDERFUL! she was 6 weeks early so she was in the stage 2 nursery...We also lived about 100 miles form Austin (in the hill country) and they let us stay in the room for 5 days to be with her...The nurses were awesome as was most of the staff...Dont be worried...It was a great experience for us!

Just an FYI... Seton Central has *the* most advanced NICU in Austin. So, this is something for you to consider (and evaluate the hospital for) if your baby needs to go into NICU due to some unexpected reason.

I had a totally perfect, healthy pregnancy and then micomium was present in my fluid during labor... our daughter swallowed it... and she did require NICU immediately after birth.

Nowhere here are you going to get the same treatment you got in France. I had 2 in the states and my third at the Hopital Beclerc outside Paris. I used to take baby pictures at South Austin, several years ago. They seemed to me to be on the same level as most of the other hospitals here. Since you are early in your pregnancy, you can check out a group of midwives who practice in town. I'm sorry I don't know their names, but it should be available. They would be closer to the French way of doing things than anything else here. Bonne Chance.

Congrats, and good luck. I am not sure why you think you cannot get a midwife here, you can. If you want someone to be with you the whole way, find a midwife doula and hire her for the birth, unfortunately USA health care system thinks it is a waste of money for a doctor to focus that much time on one person. AS for SAH, I would never have a child there. We live south, and my husband has had go to the emergency room a few times, he still believes he is invincible, and we have never really had good experiences.No since of urgency, dirty floors and walls, giving the wrong meds once. The one time I had to go t the emergency we drove up to Seton on 34rth. If you would like the name of a practice that has a midwife and easy access to doulas, just send me a private message, I would be happy to share.

I had my son there 8 years ago and would never go back. Had my daughter (2) at St. David's and it was awesome. I belive they are owned by the same company so not sure why the experiences were so different but they were night and day. My labor with my son was at night. The nurse checked me and I was not ready. This went on from 10 until 3. She called the doctor to give her an update every couple of hours. Around 2:30, she checked me and I still wasn't ready so she let the doctor know. 30 minutes later, she checked me again and I was fully diulated and ready to push yet the nurse TOLD me she did not want to call the doctor and tell her because she had just told her I was not ready and didn't want to wake her. THat was at 3 in the morning. The doctor did not show up until 7 am. They told me to lie on my side and not to push until the doctor could get there. Being my first child, I listened. When the doctor did finally get there, they put me back on my back and my son who had been crowning slid back down and I had to start all over with the process. Plus I told them I wanted an epidural and when I did the tour, the hospital had told me there was always an anesthesiologist (sp?) in the hospital - lie! He did not get there until 7 either and then I was told it was too late, I would have to do a natural childbirth. Lesson learned. Voice your concerns and throw a fit until they listen and I was never going back there again!

My sister in law just had a baby at South Austin (Dr. Hooi is also her OBGYN and she really likes her). When she got to the hospital Dr. Hooi was not on call, one of her collegues was. The rooms were nice, the nurses were awesome! The other dr. was VERY RUDE, did not allow anyone to talk while she was in the room, got frustrated with my sis-in-law while she had to wait on her to get through a contraction, didn't attempt to look through her birthing plan until asked a few times, and not once did she ask what would make my sis-in-law comfortable. I'm not trying to scare you, just inform you of a really bad experience that we all had while trying to enjoy this experience. Luckily, my sister in law was in labor so long that Dr. Hooi ended up coming to deliver. But we will all always remember how frustrating it was, instead of the great experience we were expecting.

I delivered at South Austin Hospital and had a good birthing experience. Dr. Hooi was also my OBGYN, she was wonderful. The nursing staff was very helpful and sweet. They made my delivery (which was my first) and recovery a very great experience.

I delivered at South Austin Hospital and had a good birthing experience. My labor nurse was excellent, as well as, all the other parties involved with mine and my daughters care. This is very short and sweet, but I don't have any complaints really. Good luck.
