Question About Colon Cleanses

I am wondering if any one had done a colon cleanse. I don't have any health issue that I am dealing with I just think it would be good "spring cleaning" I have a 14 month old daughter who nurses about 4 times a day still, but they are pretty short 10 minutes or less.

I have heard that you should not do a cleanse while pregnant which I am not but I have also heard that you can pump and discard your milk for the first two days of nursing while the cleanse is the heaviest, and resume after that even though you are still on the cleanse.

Has anyone ever done one, if so how did it go, and what one did you use?
I am especially curious if anyone has done a cleanse while nursing.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

When you are ready, Market America offers a seven day cleanse that is awesome (and affordable). Most people who use them do so when the seasons change. Jenny already told you about Market America's OPC-3...for the NutriClean product you would look in the middle of her web portal for the logo and click on it.

Good luck!

I would go to a health food store and get a reputable cleanse. But I would speak with someone who knows the products they sell. Or go online and perhaps find a site where you can ask questions. Maybe a live chat.

I'm sure there are many people who will tell you how wonderful a cleanse is, but my question is always this: Are our bodies designed to NEED this? What did people do for the last 8000 years before this proceedure began? Anything invasive should be carefully researched!

you do not need a good spring cleaning.

there is no hidden waste in anyones body.

I would definately not do this while you are nursing. It could be dangerous to the baby - it does not matter if she nurses for 10 minutes or an hour- she is exposed to everything you ingest.

Take citrucel if you need a fiber supplement to get things moving.

I just saw on Oprah where they did a study with 8 women- 4 ate better(lots of fruits and veggies and high protein meats) and 4 who did the colon cleanse. Surprisingly, there was no change in the women who did the cleanse. I suggest adding more fiber(you're supposed to have 25g a day)and eating 5-6 servings a day of fruits and veggies. The green leafy stuff(romaine lettuce, swiss chard, spinach) will really help push everything through(natural cleansing). Enjoy that baby- it goes by fast!

My husband swears by them , and has talked me into it also. It was awful--I was so sick. I will NEVER do it again! I would be affraid this will make your baby sick! I don't believe in that dumping thing, unless you were to not nurse for the whole time. I'd take Lacy's advice.

Hi B.,
I would tend to agree (to some extent) with most of the comments about waiting till you wean the baby. I am nursing too and was tempted to do it, but am waiting. You can do a "detox diet" to help you out (there is one suggested in the Transitions Lifestyle System program that I am doing, which is eating low glycemic index foods, drinking lots of water and eating plenty of fresh veggies. If you want to do one later on, a mild one that takes 7 days you can read more about it on my web portal at: www.marketamerica.com/jendiehl if you go to that you can look it up and read more details (ingredients, etc..). One thing that I am taking while I am nursing that is good for both me and the baby and is fighting the free radicals is a powerful Antioxidant called OPC3 that we also sell. It is safe to take while nursing (asked my doctor too) and I know of several health professionals who use it and sell it. The results for me have been dramatic. I have not been sick (or the baby) since taking it and have more energy and feel great. I know of several who have had the same results. If you want to see more look it up on my web portal (click on OPC3 and then click on the "i" for more information and read the ingredients, scientific studies done and benefits, etc... of go to "maTV" to watch a short commercial about any products (under mamedia). It helps! I would hold off on the cleanse but either consider the Transitions detox diet (safe for baby) or the OPC3 instead. Let me know if you have any questions, feel free to call me at: ###-###-#### or send me an e-mail: ____@____.com. Thanks and remember to drink lots of water while you are nursing, that will help you both out!
Blessings,
J. Diehl

my husband and I do colon cleanses every few months. We use one that is great, it's a tea and a fiber drink. It really rocks the first few days! A 2-3 month cleansing program is recommended for first time users.

Look it up online. Go to www.drnatura.com
we use the colonix one, it's all natural. You can not take it when you are nursing or pregnant. I took it directly to my doctor and there are too many things that are not good for baby.

Check it out.

Are you familiar with Arbonne? Well they have a vitamin that is a Herbal Colon Cleanse. Although I didn't use it while I was pregnant, a friend of mine did and has continued during breastfeeding. It's more natural than other methods.

Hi B.!
For a wealth of info on cleanses try checking out Mercola.com. I just received an e-mail from him regarding a 10 day cleanse that I am going to start in a couple weeks.

One bit of advice though...Even though his cleanse is all natural with no harmful meds...still talk to your pediatrician or someone about doing this while nursing. If you would like, I can seek the advice of my boss (he's a Chiropractor and an expert in the area of human wellness). Just let me know!

Good Luck!

Hi! My name is A., I'm a SAHM of 3. I've done colon cleanses while nursing. I did one recently when my daughter was about 13 or 14 months, I really wasn't concerned too much about my milk since I was detoxing my gut. I use a product called "OxyPowder", from oxypowder.com. It's awesome! I don't have any health issues either, but I am a very gassy person so I cleanse a few times a year to remove the impaction in my intestines. It doesn't contain any stimulants or laxatives, it uses oxygen to dissolve the impaction and pass it. You do a 10 day cleanse that involves at least 3-5 BM's per day and then you can choose to take a maintenance dose after the cleanse. I highly recommend it, let me know if you have any more questions! A.

From a medical standpoint, colon cleansing is unnecessary! What is FAR more important is a balanced diet high in fiber, up towards 30 grams/day is great! Normal people do not need any more 'cleansing' than a daily BM. There are way more health benefits to diet modification than to a one-time deal. Besides, most of the products on the market are nothing more than bulk producing, and when taken with water swell up to fill your colon and make it seem like you are being cleaned out by the volume of the BM. Don't get me wrong, taking a daily bulk-producing fiber supplement is a healthy habit, but I would skip the hype of a 'cleanse'. The myth that we hold feces in our bodies for years and need to be cleaned out is just a scam to sell a product.

Hi B., I am an Herbalife Distributor, I went to my mentor about your question, she just had a baby a few weeks ago. She recommends the Herbal Aloe. She takes that, and it is natural for you and won't hurt the baby.

Hi B., I've been curious about the same thing myself. I have a 2 y.o. son that I am nursing but I've opted to wait until he is completely weaned before I do a cleanse. My husband did a cleanse last year and he said it helped clear up a lot of issues for him. There are a lot of opinions on the subject of cleanses. Most of the mainstreamers seem to think that it's a waste of time/money/effort. Even some of the alternafolks think it's a waste of time. But, when you see pictures of the stuff that has come out of people's bodies after doing a cleanse . . . I think that's pretty convincing. After talking to people who have eliminated large masses from their bodies (no, not just poo) you kind of wonder if there might be something to it. This is the place we got my DH's cleanse from http://www.blessedherbs.com/bh/?s_hsplt=1 Anyway, it's probably better to err on the side of caution. You wouldn't want to inadvertently expose your baby to some heavy metals or God-knows-what else that might resurface during a cleanse. It doesn't just come out of your butt, it comes out of your pores, and every other elimination point your body can push it out of. Not only that, but you are basically fasting for most of a cleanse, so depending on how long you did the cleanse for, you most likely would not be sufficiently supporting yours AND your daughter's nutritional needs during that time. If you just go vegetarian for a week or two, that ought to help get you feeling pretty cleaned out. I'll be watching to see if there are any other posts that answer your question. God Bless You!

B.,

I have done cleanses before and found them worthwhile. I did them in conjunction with my chiropractor and I appreciated the medical support. Today I noticed there is a class on cleansing at my chiropractor's office on Saturday, May 10th (9-12 am I think) and I remembered your post and thought I would let you know about it. Anyway if you are interested you can call Complete Chiropractic and Bodywork Therapy in Ann Arbor at ###-###-####.

Myself I'd wait till baby was weened before doing a cleanse. It's like mixing up the mud at the bottom of the lake. I think it would take more than 2 day to filter out. You could eat a bunch of fresh fruit, and veggies. Skip meat for beans and rice dishes (beans and rice taco's...) I'd also cut out or really skimp on the dairy too, oh and try agave instead of sugar.
