Sunscreen for Baby's Sensitive Skin?

I am seeking a really good quality, gentle and effective sunscreen for my 7 month old. I put Banana Boat's spf 50 on her yesterday, which claims to be "as gentle as water" and she broke out in what I think is eczema all over her arms, where I had put it. I would like something tear-free, and I would like to use it so when she touches me then rubs her eyes, she won't be irritated. I would prefer something reasonably priced, but will invest what is needed. Thanks!
ps. My brother has Melanoma, and my father has had 8 surgeries for basil cell carcinoma...we are VERY fair skin and really need something effecive...my dd inherited our skin :(

What can I do next?

I'm overseas and couldn't find any of the "usual" sunscreens here, but I did find one for children made by Eucerin (spf40). My youngest (3 years) has sensitive skin, but this has been great for him, and it's much more effective than other sunscreens I've used, even with the same spf. It stays and stays and stays. It was kind of pricey, but I don't know if that's b/c it's always pricey or b/c it's just one of the things that costs more here. Anyway, it may be worth checking into for you.

I use Coppertone's Water Babies on my 3 year old and my 1.5 year old and myself. We are fair skinned. My son and I have sensitive skin. (I am allergic to aloe. Very difficult when it comes to baby products and sunscreen. They put aloe in everything!)
You can give it a try ...

I've always used Waterbabies Sunscreen. It's either 45 or 50 spf. If you are fair skinned, you may need to reapply often. Not sure about any sensitive skin ones out there, tho.

My daycare turned me onto Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen - Baby. You can find it at CVS, and I want to say Target? (Buy online, too). It is high quality, and the way that it is formulated, it is not absorbed by babies' skin. I just saw that it comes in a sensitive skin option, too. For kids, it will turn blue when it is time to put on more. It applies thicker, because the skin is not absorbing it, and it goes to SPF 30, unlike the 50 for most baby sunscreen, but from what I understand about sunscreens, you don't really get much more protection after 30. It isn't cheap, but it is a good product, stays on a long time, and you don't have to wait 30 minutes before it becomes effective.

Hi S....try water babies...the pink bottle with the toddler and puppy on it. I used it on my girls for years and my oldest has really sensitive skin too. If that fails then you should talk to your doctor about it. Best wishes

Aveeno has come out with a baby sunscreen. I would try that one. We have also used Bullfrog for kids/babies. We like their spray on one. It requires no rubbing and has worked great for us. With her having had a reaction to the Banana Boat, I would try the Aveeno first. If she reacts to that I would check at the Clinique counter at a department store. I am sure it is much more expensive but their products are usually very gentle and hypoallergenic.

Good luck.

Hi S.,
I use California Baby sunscreens, and I love them. They are more expensive, but Babycenter sometimes has them on sale. I was most impressed with them when we took our son to Florida, and in five days of searing sun, and he got not one bit of sunburn. I, too, have family history of melanoma, so I'm not taking any chances with my son. He also has pretty sensitive skin and eczema, and California Baby hasn't bothered him at all.

Myself and nearly all of my family and friends use Aveeno Baby. Our babies range from extremely sensitve to very little sensitivity to lotions, etc. We've all had positive results when using it.

We use Burt's Bees because it is paraban and phalates free. It is about 16 dollars a tube, but since babies absorb more through their skin than adults do, it is worth it to me to not be pouring chemicals in through it. You can also use zinc oxide (like Desitin), but they will look like little ghosts! :-)

I have had surgery for squamos cell carinoma and my dermatologist recommended Aveeno sun block for my baby when I asked her. It's supposed to be very pure, seems to be gentle enough, and good for baby's sensitive skin.
good luck!

Hi S.,

My son also has very sensitive skin when it comes to sunscreen. I use the Aveeno Baby. It is more expensive (about $10 per bottle) but it is the only thing that doesn't make him break out in hives.

Good luck!
