Travelling Mamas - How to Check a Pack-n-play

Hi Mamas,
Going on a trip with my family soon. I've travelled a LOT with my kids, so I'm generally pretty comfortable with it. But, I've never had to take the pack-n-play before. We've always stayed at hotels and requested a crib in the room. This time we are staying at a borrowed condo, and so need to take the pack-n-play.

I'm afraid the airline baggage equipment will destroy it if I check it in the fabric case (I've had other things destroyed, like an expensive baby backpack that was in a airline-approved plastic bag). Any tips on how to check it so that it will arrive in one piece?

Thanks
Diane

Well yeah, I have checked it in just the fabric case lots of times too with no problems, so maybe you just had an unfortunate fluke with your backpack. I am surprised that it was in a bag and still was destroyed. Maybe when you check it you could ask the attendant if there was a way to put a fragile sticker on it or something.

Good luck!

I checked mine in the fabric case three times and had no problem. Many airlines have plastic bags to put around carseats and such so that is an option too. Of course there is ALWAYS a chance they will destroy it. Or lose it...

I always put ours into a large duffle bag and then packed extra clothes into the bag around it. I never had a problem and we did this MANY times, although that was long ago before all the luggage charges were in effect. I agree with the other posters buy one when you get there or check on line for a rental agency.

If you put it into the case it should be fine.

That being said, by the time you pay to check it there and back, you could have picked up a cheap, no-frills one at Target or Walmart wherever you're headed, then just donate it (or leave it and ask the folks who own the place to either keep it or donate it for you) at the end of your trip. That way you don't have to worry about it getting banged up and dirty if it's the one you use regularly for your LO.

I agree with Thea. Most airlines are going to charge you $25 each way to check it, so there's $50 and the hassle of travelling with it. I'd look at Target or Walmart online and have a cheap one shipped to your destination. Have it arranged so it arrives the same day as you do. Or buy when you are there. Also, google baby gear rental companies and see if there is one near you. I think they deliver and it maybe cheaper than checking. If I were to take it and check it, I'd take my chances in the fabric bag. You can always try to line the bag with bubble wrap for extra protection.

Could you line the bag with card board? Get an appliance box and cut it to fit.
