Any suggestions to stop my 9 month old's diarrhea? It's been 4 days. Will be calling doc tomorrow, but I'm sure she'll say we have to let it run it's course. His poor bottom is soooo red. We need to stop this.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for your advice. A virus has been going around-that's what started this. The rest of us have been sick, too, but only about 24 hrs. We were worried when my son's symptoms lasted now 5 days. We had been trying the BRAT-which is hard to do for a 9 mo old with no teeth who is not eating normally. We gave him rice cereal, baby food banans and applesauce. We did try yogurt last night and this morning. The diarrhea seems to be slowing down. The doc said the younger ones take longer to get over this virus. She gave us a prescription for a compound diaper cream (we've had this before for our oldest). It is questran in aquaphor. It's looking better after a couple of changes. Again-thank you for responding. And thank you Natalie N for suggesting this website!

Hi there S.:

The old stand-by was rice water. You Make rice but extra water .nofat (Butter or Margarien) It should look cloudy. For red and raw bottoms use A & D ointment and plain Vasline

This is probably the 50th time you've heard this, but maybe too much apple/other juice? Or too many solids coming from fibrous plants, like squash, sweet potato, fruits?

Have you recently increased his milk intake? He could be lactose intolerant. It usually shows up as rather the opposite problem, constipation. But in some people, it becomes diarrhea.

It could be a mild form of food poisoning. In which case, well, I'd suggest grapefruit seed extract for an adult, but definitely not for a little one of his age. Most cases of stomach upset are actually various forms of food poisoning, though, so ask his doctor what to do for that. And look around at what he has been eating. Anything seem a little off in smell or date?

Meanwhile, though, keep that baby hydrated with lots of water or very diluted juices!

Good luck, and hang in there. It must be trying!

yogurt if you can get him to eat any also if you add real butter to his diet. Put it in oatmeal or whatever you can that usually helps. Good luck poor little man.

I'm not sure how early you can give this, but there is a product called Culturelle that I have given my children since they were quite small. It is a capsule of powder containing probiotics - good bacteria. You just open the capsule and dissolve the powder in juice or water. Check with your doctor first to confirm, but I can't imagine there would be any reason you couldn't use it on a little one. It helps to restore the balance in the digestive tract.

Also, my kids seemed to be very susceptible to getting raw bottoms when they had diarrhea. My pediatrician had me mix Desitin with a powdered enzyme that he gave me. The enzyme helps to "break down" the poop before it has time to burn the skin. My understanding is it is usually prescribed to kids that have a serious condition that causes them to be deficient in the enzymes that break down food and I think they take it orally. But, mixed with the Desitin, it is a GREAT way to protect little bottoms until the illness can pass.

Good luck!

I know I am late but it may help in the future for diarrhea. Take about three or four pecans crack in half boil in water to make a light brown tea let cool stain then drink. Mom has used it for years

Our dr recommended Culturelle too. You can get it at Walmart and some grocery stores. You have to make sure to mix it with cold liquids like juice or water and not things you would normally heat up like formula. Also yogurt is a big help. We've been using the Culturelle since ours was about 7 months old.

the BRAT diet is the one i always do. don't forget to give him some pedialyte so he won't get dehydrated!! Oh, and for his little sore bottom...when you change him, cake on diaper cream or vaselive, to keep moisture off. then, before you close up the diaper, dump in a LOT of baby powder!! My little guy had really bad diarrhea, and that helped with his sore bottom!! That way the baby powder absorbs most of the moisture...good luck, I hope he gets better soon!!

BIO K for children. It is a yogurt like probiotic that is amazing. Most likely bad bacteria are out weighing the good causing the diarrhea. Avoid milk products at this time as the diarrhea causes lactost intolerance. www.biok.com

Well, I don't have much advice for stopping the diarrhea, but as far as booty rashes go, our personal faves have been Corona butt creme, the old style thick white Desitin, and Aquaphor at bedtime once his bottom is all healed. If he has little pin prick looking red dots or the red looks almost like a burn from scalding water or chemical burn, a lot of times its yeast and responds better to over the counter yeast infection creams like monistat twice/day. (rubbed on his bottom, no applicator usage obviously!!) Good luck!!

Hey, S.!
I remember getting a can of lactose free formula from my doctor's office (sample size) and it doing the trick. Since at 9 mos. old they are obviously still going to want their bottle of milk to comfort themselves and not much else, this works because their poor systems have lost the enzymes that break down lactose after being sick with a stomach bug. So giving them their regular formula or milk isn't going to allow them to get back on track. I've even bought the lactose free milk in a carton at the grocery store when my kids (as toddlers) were getting over being sick and wanted nothing but their cup of milk, so at least they will still get their much-needed fluids. Then of course, the BRATS diet and especially yogurt with the live active cultures is good for anyone who's had the bug, and just eating very little at first and gradually getting back to normal eating portions over several days. Poor little guy, and mom! Hope this ends quickly and we'll talk to you soon!

Hopefully your baby is doing better. I'm not sure about the diarrhea but the sore bottom- I was told this is a old Indian treatment. Find some dirt dobber nest on your house- scrap it off- put it in a ziplock bag and mash it until it is dust- then put it in a really thin cloth like cheese cloth or a really thin clean dish towel- make it like a powered puff and puff it on the rash, etc.
I was told the salivia in the nest is what helps heal the rash. I lived by this the last two years and it worked everytime for us. I used everything over the counter and then my mother-in-law told me about this, so i tried it and I have not had to buy anything else.
Good luck and hope this works.

I have worked in the hospital settings for many years plus have had very sick children of my own. I also have learned alot from my brother who is a pediatrician. The thing is young infants can easily dehydrate even though you think you are getting enough fluids to them. Waiting 4 days when a baby has diarrhea is way too long to get them to the pediatrician. If you haven't taken your baby to the doctor get them there right away. It's always better to err on the side of caution when kids are sick than not. Often times my son who is asthmatic looked ok but the reality is that he was not. Infants and children can suddenly turn quickly for the worse. I hope this information does not scare you because that is not my intention. It is to educate you.

Depending on how much he is keeping down and he frequency of his diarrhea the dr. may actually want to see him immediately to make certain he isn't getting dehydrated. This is a major concern for young children and can land them in the hospital. Is he pee-peeing also? This will indicating if he is staying hydrated. There is a terrible stomach virus going around as well as salmonella from an off-brand of peanut butter. That p.butter recall is supposed to me announced more widely today (not Jif or Peter Pan). I would go ahead and call the dr. quickly and talk to a nurse.

For that poor little raw bottom, mix some powdered (baby)acidophilus or probiotics (you can open a capsule of culturelle or any other brand, and use 1/3 - 1/2) into some diaper cream. Make sure the cream is petroleum free...can cause some rashes to worsen and burn. I found a product at a health food store called UN-Petroleum Jelly. It works well. Otherwise, I use Arbonne's diaper cream....excellent.

Anyway, the combo of the probiotics and the diaper cream help that little sore bottom.
My mom SWARES by A & D ointment for such irritations (however it does contain petroleum). You could open a vit A & Vit D. cap and add it to your diaper cream as well.

Just like others recommended:
1. Plain yoguart (no fruit or sugar added) will help his little tummy.

2. Lots of liquids (your breast milk is best...if you nurse). Pedialite is also very important to keep from dehydration. Avoid JUICES!

3. B.R.A.T. diet

I've been through this a few times with my son and it's no fun.
Will be praying for you both.
Please let us know when he is better!!

Blessings,
A.

My 9 month baby boy just got over being really sick - diarrhea & runny nose - the works. His Dr. told me he had the viral rotavirus. Very dangerous. Been going around this year apparently. Prescribed pedialyte & Similac Isomil DF = soy formula for diarrhea + BRAT diet (bananas, rice cereal, applesauce - she told me to forget the toast part). Which he wouldn't eat a thing of.
I'm still breastfeeding so she put me on a 'sick diet' - soup & anything else bland. When he hadn't eaten a thing for nearly 24 hours I broke down & feed him the soup part of my chicken & rice soup. He ate it which I liked cos at least he was NOT going 2 become dehydrated.
9 days later & he's back 2 normal!!
Don't 4get to use BALMEX - its creamy texture is smooth & soft on bottoms + its works on contact!
GOOD LUCK! & GIVE LOTS OF LOVE!

As for the bottom, try using just cotton pads (like many people use to remove makeup - has no chemicals on them) instead of regular wipes that will hurt the little bottom. Just simple wet them and wipe like normal.

Like everyone has said, the BRAT diet, and also you can try giving him cheese, if he's not sick to his stomach. Your doctor can give you something to stop it, as well. My kids went through a period where they had it for weeks, and their doc gave them something that helped immediately, although I can't recall the name of it.

I didnt read the other responses so Im sorry if I repeat whats already been said. We've been dealing with diarrhea for 7 days now with our 4 month old nephew. He went to the pediatrician today just to be sure he isnt getting dehydrated. I thought Id let you know what he recommended. He said use pedialyte (we got unflavored)as a substitute for water in his formula, if he wont drink it alone. If he will drink it by its self he said to give it to him like that. He also said to give him acidophilus. I couldnt find acidolphilus at our small country drug store but the pharmacist recommended Culturelle for Kids. He said its the same thing only this is new and actually made for kids. You can get it in liquid, powder or capsules. They only had capsules so I emptied half in his bottle and his doctor said do that 2-3 times per day until the diarrhea is gone. It has the lactobacillus in it with probiotics that help promote good bacteria in the digestive tract and shorten the time of diahrrea. It was cheap as well 10 capsules for about $7.00.

His bottom also got bad and we got Tripple paste and baby goldbond powder and it worked in just a couple of changes!

Good luck and I hope your little one feels better soon!
