Other than Motrin does anyone have alternative treatments for high fevers? My little guy has had a 104.0 fever since Monday!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thankfully after last night the fever broke and he is back to normal, and yes, he was seen by the pediatrician on Monday.

I've found Tylenol/acetaminophen more effective than Motrin/Ibuprofen for childrens' fevers. Motrin is usually the better of the two for pain relief and anti-inflammation.

My doctor says if the fever doesn't respond to treatment it is time to call the doctor. If you haven't been in touch with a doctor, I would suggest you do so.

My daughter had a 104 temp last month, so we kept her cool in just a diaper or onsie. We also brought the fever down by giving her a tepid bath each time it got that high. Hope this helps.

Not sure what the other moms said, but my doctor tells me to alternate with tylenol and motrin. (about every 3 hours.) They are not dangerous because they are not the same ingrediants. I would definatly check with your doctor, because that is a long time to have such a high fever. You might want to get his ears checked.

As others have already said alternate tylenol and motirin every three hours. See the dr. since he's had the fever for so long. Lukewarm baths are good, not too cold. A cold bath will make his body fight to warm up and drive the fever higher. Lots of liquids.

I agree with other moms piggy back tylenol and Motrin. I experienced this with my daughter when she was one, high fevers for 4 days and then after the fever broke she looked like she had chicken pox. Turns out it was Roseola. She has also had a double ear infection which creates the high fevers and my little one has suffered two febrile seizures. Other than a tylenol suppository to instantly bring down that fever its hard to keep it down. I would take the baby in to the doctor just to make sure its not an ear infection.

If your son has had 104 since Monday he should go to the dr. But if you want to get it down make sure he has no socks on heat leaves your body through your feet and head. Also try a cool bath start it warm so that he does not scream. then slowly add cool water. you don't want it cold just cool. Hope this helps.

Please call your Pediatrician if it goes beyond 3 days (with no other symptoms) or you're concerned.

One of our daughters had a high fever--we spoke to a nurse to see if we should come in on day 3. She said so long as there were no other symptoms and we were keeping the fever down with Tylenol or Motrin, we should be ok, but come in if it goes 5-7 days. We took our daughter in on day 5 and the doctor said we shouldn't wait beyond 3-4 days as a very high fever could signal something more serious that needs further treatment.

You may just want to consult with your Pediatrician, even over the phone. Based on your circumstances, they may say wait another day or potentially come in for a visit.

Good luck, G.

My son gets that way too. A lukewarm bath, light clothing and alternating tylenol with motrin. For instance, if you give the tylenol at noon, give the motrin at two and then the tylenol again at four. That's what we do everytime our son gets sick, which is a lot because he was a premie. Just make sure you are pushing fluids too. Otherwise you might end up at the hospital for dehydration. Good luck, and hope he gets better quick!

I would definitely go to the emrgency room at this point. But if you have been seen already and are just waiting it out, a lukewarm bath is good. You want to avoid sudden temperature changes like a very cold bath.

The concern with a fever this high in young children is causing febrile seizures, which are generally not dangerous, but are not great either.

Also, keeping hydrated with pedialyte, popsicles, etc is very important. Hope he feels better soon.

If you haven't already, please get him to the doctor. I am a nurse and little children shouldn't run a high fever for several days. If you have had him to the doctor already, call and tell him that it is no better. It could be strep or something that could do permanent damage.

Ice baths, cold washcloth sponge baths, and you can alternate between Mortin (ibuprofen) and Tylenol (acetominophen) to get the fever down. Give cool liquids to prevent dehydration. If he is very lethargic or pale get him into the doctor or ER.

At this point call the doctor. The best course might be the Emergency Room.

My son has had a fever since midnight Sunday & we just got back from the pedi today. Don't let everyone scare you, you know your child best!

We called the second my son woke with 103.9 & the Dr. on-call said that if it goes over 105 to take him to the hospital. It never did but it sure felt like he was on fire! I've been giving him Motrin & Tyl every 3 hours & he would eat & drink like a champ & play with some fussiness through out the day. After 3 nights of fever I took him in today just be check'd. Of course his fever was almost gone & his nose started running like a faucet! It was just a really bad cold.

Hang in there! If he's eating & drinking pretty good, I wouldn't panic.

Have you seen your doctor? My duaghter used to get them all the time and it turned out she had kidney reflux and was getting kidney infection and at that young age, she could not tell me what really hurt. Fevers that high are not normal, have tests run for infections, it is better to be too safe than sorry in the end! Good luck and let us know how he is doing!

I agree with most other moms. My son is one of those kids who gets really high fevers, esp. after a shot. What really works for him is the alternation between Motrin and Tylenol. Give him Motrin at first, wait 3 hours then give him Tylenol, wait another 3 hours, continue with the Motrin, etc. until the fever breaks. But it's always a good idea to consult your pediatrician or family doctor, because the fever may indicate an infection. I learned that if my son had a cold without fever, but he develops one afterward, it's usually indicative of an ear infection, whereas if he develops fever during the cold, it's just a cold symptom. Never hurts to check it out. If he has, indeed, an infection, he needs medication.
Hope this helps!

When my kids have high fevers, i use motrin and tylenol. they are both diferent so you can alternate them. Also eating lots of popsicles will help along with running around the house half naked. Don't worry about giving him both meds as they are not the same and it will help to keep his fever down. When you give motrin, about an hour later give tylenol, then in 3 more hours give motrin again and then an hour later use tylenol. I hope that helps you.

I would go ahead and take him to the ER if I were you. I'm always told by my doctor to do Motrin after 3 hours do Tylenol and keep going. But I think 104 since Monday sounds worrisome - sorry to get you alarmed. It would be better that way, because it could be an infection that needs something else like an antibiotic or something.

Good Luck,

I just went through the samething with my daughter. I was switching between the motrin and Tylenol. The motrin seemed to work better though. I also gave her luke warm baths when she got really high and that seemed to calm it down a little bit. I took her to the doctors on the third day and they told me to keep doing what I was doing but also when she is laying down to put a cool compress on her forehead or wrists. I hope some of this helps and your little one gets better SOON.

Talk to your doctor. My kids ran high fevers 105-106 whenever they would get sick. Our doctor told us to give Tylenol then 3 hours later give Motrin and continue to alternate between the two. Of course talk to yur doctor first before doing this. As you can see my kids ran very high fevers!!

Use a cool washcloth on his head and wrists. My son hated that, so my doctor told me to use a spray bottle to cool off his head. If you make a game out of it he may cooperate (depending on his age).

Give him a luke-warm bath. He'll HATE it - because it will feel freezing cold to him - but it should drop his temp. Also, with a fever that high I'd call a doctor.

Hi S..
You can use tylenol; it is great with fever reduction. Be sure to follow the dosing. Too much can be a real problem. Iit is processed in the liver and too much can become toxic. Having said that, too much is quite alot. Just check with your doctor--doses are based on weight. I usually alternate from ibuprofen to the tylenol.
Also, you can give him cool baths to bring his temp down. It is a temporary measure, but it works.
Oh, and check in with your health care provider anyway.
Good luck.

Hi-

Cool washcloths, alternate Motrin and Tylenol (Motrin will last longer, so I'd do that at night). I presume you already called your doctor and they recommended some of the same.

Just wanted to give you a heads up-- my son had a fever like that a few years ago. Don't be surprised if your son breaks out in a bad rash-- he might have roseola. That's pretty much the course of the virus-- high fever for several days, then a really scary looking rash. But, by the time the rash comes, the fever's gone and no longer contagious. My niece just had roseola this week, so it's going around.

Take care of your little man. I hope he's doing better.
