Volunteer Opportunities for My Children and I

I am looking for ideas to get my children involved in volunteer opportunities. I would volunteer along with them as they are only 5 1/2 (twins). I feel they are very demanding and need to ne exposed to others in need. I admit this is due to their upbringing. At one time, we really thought nothing of making trips to the dollar store (just because...this is not something they had earned). About three months ago I noticed they became demanding and noticed attitudes were developing when they did not get what they wanted. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

Hi L.
The Berenstain Bears Think of Those in Need is a good book.
My 5 yo and I just finished helping at a blight busters/art works location in Old Redford where we built a temple. Sort of a fancy gazebo, planted trees, flowers, and also helped in the kitchen to feed the other volunteers. She did a really good job, and we did get some work done too. We talked about what a community was, and the good work being done while we worked.
We also have a secret mission to spread joy. When we go out into the world we smile at people and wave, do small things to help. I found this had a really big positive effect on our attitudes. You can't spread joy if your grumpy.
Good luck :) A. H

Gleaners food banks in Warren and POntiac have programs that allow you to help pack food for needy families and learn about who the food goes to, where it comes from, etc.
My 9 year old and I also did the American Cancer Society's Relay for LIfe and she learned about helping people with cancer, fundraising, etc.

Ok first of all, your children are normal. Kids always go through their demanding "me" stanges. I have a feeling you and your children will get through this stage just fine. They just need to know who is boss and it will pass. As far as volunteer work (which is always nice no matter what the circumstance) try checking out animal rescue places. Not only are they usually in need of help, but the children will enjoy it while learning a lesson. I'm not sure of any in your area, but you could probably look it up online. My son worked for a couple out of their home who rescued animals. The animials were mostly birds and they talked..it was really cool, but it was work too. Maybe something to think about.

I think it's great that you want to teach your girls to give back. You could volunteer at a food bank or shelter.

Maybe you could start a toy drive at your church/temple to teach the idea of charity to your girls.

Perhaps you might try your local chapter of Meals on Wheels and take them along. It gives them some sense of service and puts them a bit out of their comfort zone. I have taken my boys and found it works great...the senior citizens LOVE it when little ones help deliver their food and are willing to visit for a brief bit....is a win/win......

Hello L.,

Check out Kids Against Hunger, www.kidsagainsthungermi.org

It is geared towards kids, the work is kid-friendly. It's a great mix between kids and adults helping together. I have helped out at the Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Oak Park, MI and there are all ages of Kids preparing meals (no stoves, it's a dry mixture bagged and shipped to anywhere people need help). Have Fun with your kids and also encourage them to make a donation of money to show both sides of charity.
