What Age Did They Walk?

How old was your child when they first started walking? I ask this question because my almost one year old seems to have no interest in walking. I wouldn't normally question this but he has 3 other boys in his daycare classroom who are all within a week apart from each other and they are walking. Also, once he starts walking he moves into Toddler I class which is 100.00 cheapier a month:). hee hee. No...really...I am very curious on what age other parents children were when they walked.

What can I do next?

I had 8 children and they all started walking at different ages, ranging from 11 months to 15 1/2 months.

My son was almost 10 months when he started to walk, but I wouldn't worry too much about it because there were a bunch of us who had children around the same time and they all started walking at different times. In fact the oldest of the kids which was 2 months older than my son was around 16 months when he started to walk.

My son is named Hayden too, and he didn't start walking until he was a week away from being 15 mos. Does your son pull himself up or walk holding onto furniture? If not, he will soon, and that will let you know he is getting the balance and confidence needed to try it on his own. All toddlers are different, so they reach milestones at different times. Don't worry, you will be chasing after him before you know it.

Hey, B.. I wouldn't worry at all. My son walked on his first birthday, my daughter was just under 11 months, one niece was 9 months and a nephew was 15 months. All babies are different. My daughter didn't start pointing at things until she was over a year, my son did when he was 9 months. I guess my point is that every baby has their "firsts" at different times. The milestones are just averages... some babies are earlier, some are later.

I have twin girls...one started walking at 9 months and the other started walking about week after their 1st birthday. I have 3 friends with 12 month old babies (they all turned 1 in July and none of their babies are walking, as a matter-of-fact, they aren't even interested in crawling or pulling up...mhmmm. I think kids are going to do what they want to do when they want to do it!

B. - I would not be to concerned. My two oldest girls did not start to walk until 15 months and 14 months. Each child is different and they will do it when they are ready. My doctor seemed concerned with my oldest because she was a late walker, But she also was very small for her age. I think it just depends on how independent the child wants to be.

Don't worry, your little one will start walking before you know it. Once they start it seems like you can't get them to sit still long enough to even eat. Enjoy it as long as you can because it is a whole new world when they discover the independence they gain from walking.

I hope this make you feel a little better. Just remember - Don't Rush It.

my oldest started pulling up and walking around furniture at 7 1/2 months but did not actually walk on his own until a week before his 1st birthday. We thought he was going to be an early walker around 9 months but he wouldn't let go. He would walk down the couch and if he needed to go across the room he would get down and crawl to the next thing and pull himself up and walk holding on to whatever he crawled to. He even pushed his walker around the room but wouldn't let go of anything until he was ready.

2nd one was almost a year before she started walking around furniture and didn't walk on her own until a week after her birthday.

3rd one was around 13 months when he walked on his own.

All kids are different and doctors usually won't start worrying about it until at least 15-18 months.
You could try standing him up to the couch and put his favorite toy at the other end and see if he will walk down the couch to get it. Also hold his hands and have him walk with you.

my son started walking at 9 months, which they told me was extremely early, however a friend's baby (a month younger than my son) didn't start until she was almost 17 months. you can always encourage him by holding his hands, helping him "stand". that helps their muscles develop. they have to be ready physically AND mentally, though. he'll get it, good luck! it makes life easier but it sure does make you miss those "baby" days!

My niece didn't decide to start walking until 15 months. She's a healthy, smart, well adjusted 7 year old now. No worries, except maybe financially til your Toddler I class! :)

My son did not walk until he was 15 1/2 months.....he was way behind the other babies in his daycare....they kept him in the infant area until he was a better walker. Once he figured it out it did not take long until he started running...now that is all he does!!

I'm a SAHM and my son didn't start walking until he was almost 14 months. He has 2 older siblings and I would of thought he'd have started earlier trying to keep up with them, but it was quite the opposite! He hasn't stopped yet since he started walking...he actually runs everywhere, so beware of the "late bloomers" and enjoy it a little longer before your little one is more mobile! Take care.

My kids started walking early. Both my girls at 11 months and my son who is 10 1/2 months now is taking some steps and I assume will be walking at 11 months also.

Both my girls were 17 months old when they started walking. I was too naive with the first to even think this was unusual, and with the second, thought it was normal. I'd just wait until his 12 month check and if you have concerns, tell his dr.

BTW, that old wives tale about delayed walkers may be true - both my girls read 3 grade levels ahead, and are two levels ahead in math!
