We may be relocating to CT from Chicago and I am looking for information on schools in or around Darien. Do most people send their children to private or public schools? Any schools better than others. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Darien has good public schools, but Westport and Greenwich, both very close to Darien, are known for having outstanding public schools. There are also a lot of very good private schools in the area. I live in Stamford (right next to Darien), and grew up in the Greenwich Public School system. If you would like to talk more, please send me a message!

T., Welcome to the area! I don't have any experience with the Darien schools to answer the main part of your request, but I do have experience moving to this area from Chicago. (I live in White Plains, NY, now, not too far away from Darien.) This is a beautiful part of the country...and Chicago is just a short flight away from the Westchester County Airport in White Plains! Best of luck to you.

The public schools there are all good and most people send their kids to public school. There are five elementary schools, one middle and one HS. I haven't heard any comments about one school being better than another. New Canaan public schools are also good.

Try public school first to see how you like it before checking into private school which can get pretty pricey. Check the website for public school, parents-to-parents, great schools for more information of the public school near your home in CT.

I believe that being a New York city "bedroom" town, Darien has a very good tax allotment for education. I went to school there many moons ago :-).

The latest issue of Connecticut magazine talks to quality of public high schools. The top ten were: Staples (in Westport), Wilton, Avon, Ridgefield, Darien, Weston, New Canaan, Farmington, Simsbury, and Joel Barlow (Redding). Most in these towns go public, except possibly New Canaan). Greenwich has more private school students.

Within towns that have good schools, you may find the deciding factor is the kind of town you want and amenities (e.g. proximity to NYC etc.). For instance, Wilton has a lot of 1-2 acre lots, Darien is more "town" like, etc.

Good luck!
