What to Do with Baby Clothes...

I have a ton (a TON!) of boy baby clothes newborn/0-3 months, and 3-6 months (and pretty soon 6-9 months too). I'm not interested in going through the hassle of selling them, and I don't want to throw them out. What can I do with them? I'm currently pregnant with our 2nd (and LAST) child, and it's a girl, so there's no point in saving them.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I've decided to hold onto them until after my next ultrasound (I just want to hear one more tech say it's a girl before I give away all my boy things!). I've gotten lots of requests for them, so they'll definitely be "rehomed" to someone who can use them!

You can donate the clothes to a Goodwill or A womens & children facility. They would be greatly apperciated by those that can not afford going to a regular store to buy the items they need.

If I were you, I would donate them to a charitable consignment shop. There is a place on South Madison, about 3 miles south of downtown Indy, that sells a bit of everything... I think it's called Annabelle's... and I know that most all of the profits go towards a good cause. If you don't care about getting money from them, this would be a great way to be "green" and recycle them.

Once Upon A Child is a consignment shop that you can take and they'll give you cash for them - not a lot, but if you have a sizeable amount it may add up. Also, Goodwill or Amvets is always an option. Amvets will even pick up.

Becky,

I give my old clothes to my nanny Maria who then sends them off to single moms in Guatemala - they NEED clothes for their little babies....she tries to help those young moms.

Her name is Maria Bernales her cell number is ###-###-####. She is great and if you are in the north side of the city she could pick them up or I am in Glencoe and I could pick up for her.

When I became a Mom I realize that so many Moms dont have what they need for their babies and thought this is one little way to help them...thanks for thinking the same way!

One idea is to gift them. Check out www.freecycle.org. It is a web page where you can sign on to a local group and give away items you can't use anymore. People are always looking for baby items and grateful for the gift.

Depending on where you live, you could donate the clothes to PHD in Palatine. They are a clinic which aids and councils women and families dealing with pregnancy and parenting. They have a counciling program that allows mothers to receive donated items for their children called the Maternity Closet. It's a really wonderful program run by some amazing women, and PHD has been around for over 30 years. If you are interested in checking them out, their website it www.sphd.org

hi Becky,

I know several NICUs in the area would very much appreciate the donation: when babies are ready to go home, they may not have anything to go in!

If you want to PM me, I will be happy to give you more details. there are also women's shelters (Sojurner, Julian Center) who would SALIVATE over such a generous donation.

It has been a real blessing to have a friend of ours give us some hand-me-down clothes for our daughter. My friend has no children to give her daughter's clothes to, so we are the happy recipients! Perhaps you have a friend who may bennifit from your son's clothes. If you attend a church, or know of a church in your area, they may know of a family in need this season of some boy clothes. And of course, there's always the Salvation Army, Goodwill or other store like that. Please remember those who are less fortunate than ourselves. 'Tis the season of giving! Good luck!

Hi! It looks like you've gotten a ton of responses and I haven't read them all, so I hope I'm not repeating, but I recently found out myself that Delnor Hospital (and I'm sure other hospitals too) accept donations of used baby clothes, particularly newborn clothes, which they package up to give to mothers in need. Some of the mothers giving birth there don't have much and some are even homeless. This is a great program that they have to help those women and another good donating opportunity!

Hi Becky! I see that you have gotten ALOT of advice already...which i have yet to read through, but my first thoughts after reading your post was to donate them to Goodwill. If you do that, you can also get a form from them to fill out for taxes...all your donations are a tax deduction!!! So, it's a win-win situation! :) I do that with alot of items i have. Also, if you'd like to make a few extra dollars, take them to a consignment store. I do that with some of my kids' clothes. (I have 4 children, ages 14 yr. to 4 months!) They do not give me cash outright, instead, they have them on consignment in their store for three months, whatever sells, i get 50% profit of the ticket price! (That way of doing it nets you more money than selling outright!). Whatever does not sell, i donate to Goodwill. I also keep most of my kids' high end, name brand clothes, and list them on ebay. I'm particular about what i list...it has to be in great shape, no stains, and a recognized brand name...that way i'm pretty much guaranteed it will sell. Yes, it is difficult trying to find the time to sell on ebay with a 4 mo. old and 3 other children, but i find the time. It's almost like a part-time job, but you make your own hours and profit nicely. Usually, extra money just goes right back into buying my kids clothes that they've outgrown!!! (Then, i try to shop at the consignment stores! I love a bargain!). But, again, donating to charity is always great and gives you a feeling of doing something nice for others. I still do that regardless. They do not take clothes with stains or rips or holes though! I'm sure after all this advice, you will find a good place to put your used clothes, and get rid of the clutter once and for all!!! :) Good luck!

You could try placing a posting in you OB's office offering them to an expecting mother free of charge. Give and email address for contact so you dont have to give your phone number if you are leary of that. That is maybe a little more satisfying than just chucking them at goodwill. Of cours ask permission from the staff at the clinic before posting anything!

Just in case, I'd wait until the baby is out. I know 2 people who were told more than once it was one sex and it turned out to be the other. Mostly it happens when someone it told it's a girl. It rarely happens with an assumed boy, but I do know someone who was told twice "boy" and it came out a girl.
Have them all ready and packed up to go and then when you have a girl, put out the word to whomever wanted them that they are ready for the taking. Good Luck!

First, thank you for being so generous!

I would highly recommend PHD in Palatine. They are a nonprofit organization that provides counseling and support to people with unexpected pregnancies. One of the things they have is a baby closet, described below:

The Maternity Closet

Help supply PHD's Baby and Maternity Closet, which accepts donations of gently-used baby and children's clothing to size 6, maternity clothes, all stages baby food, formula (Similac with iron is in large demand), diapers, baby toiletries and layette items. This closet was established to assist clients with the practical needs of pregnancy and baby care.

For more about the organization, visit their website at http://www.sphd.org/index.shtml

If you aren't close to the Palatine area, let me know where you are and I probably have some ideas for closer to you.

If you can't find a good organization or person to donate the clothes to, you can always list them on craigslist or freecycle to give away. Kids stuff goes like crazy on those lists and it's a great way to recycle.

But I'm sure there are lots of hospitals, shelters or programs for young moms that would love baby clothes in good condition.

Try a site called GumdropSwap (http://gumdropswap.com). You can swap from anywhere in the US by sending the clothes your kids outgrow to this kids boutique in CT. As long your things are in good condition they don't turn down anything because of brand, size or season. They take everything unlike resale store like Once Upon a Child! They give you points to shop on the website and send the clothes that fit your kids. It's great if you don't have time, patience or know how to do consignment, Ebay, craigslist etc.

I have to disagree with Once Upon a Child. They used to be good, but lately, they want as much as possible for as little as possible. Their selections just aren't what they used to be, either. Also, they only take in-season items.

If you are not wanting to sell them, you can always donate them to a local women's and children's shelter (Turning Point in McHenry County is a good choice). There are also donation places like Salvation Army, Sparrow's Nest, and Purple Heart Veterans.

You can also list it on FreeCycle (www.freecycle.org) as something you are not selling, but just want to get rid of. I've had really good success with FreeCycle.

Another good option is maybe offering it to local moms.

Congrats and good luck!

Hi - This is my first time using this site, so I hope I am using it/understanding it right... I'm assuming you live somewhere in the same area as I do, so I will tell you about a resale store that I loved when my kids were younger (one boy and one girl, now 9 & 11 years old). It is called "Once Upon A Child" and it is located in the perimeter lot of Spring Hill Mall (by the TJ Maxx and near the Toys R Us). They will buy your items outright - not on consignment. All you do is drop your items off and within about 24 hours they will call you back to let you know what they will take. They do only buy seasonally and I think they start buying for spring/summer as of Dec.1, so I would call and check before you drive over there. But after they make the offer, if you accept it, they will write you a check on the spot. Whatever they don't accept, they will offer to donate for you (or you can take it back). They are very picky about cleanliness and wear and tear, so this is also a fantastic place to shop. They have great brand names and great quality and great prices! I can usually outfit my kids with a whole new closet of clothes for each season for under $100 and that includes shoes, outerwear and accessories.
Good Luck with both little ones!!!

Consider donating to a homeless and battered women's shelter - clothing is especially needed as temps drop. Our store routinely donates to two churches that provide clothing to low income children and families at no cost with proof of need. We also donate to a battered women's shelter because a lot of times they leave with just the clothing on their backs and have small children with them. There are also pregnancy crisis centers that take infant clothing to provide their at-risk clients. Most of these places are not as picky as store type services, like Salvation Army and Goodwill, and are just truly thrilled to have anything you provide. You can clean out your closet and get a tax donation if they are a not-for-profit organization - just write down a simple itemized list for proof and ask for a receipt which most will be happy to provide.
