What to Do with Infant Carrier Not Being Used.

My baby is 14 months old now and has not been using the infant car seat for at least a couple months now, but the car seat has just been taking up space in our small apartment because I don't know what to do with it. In the past I would save the car seat for the next baby, but he is my 4th and there most likely will not be another baby. It's only a 3yr. old Graco model, so I don't want to throw it away, but I also know because of regulations I can't sell it to a consignment store etc. Any info would be great...even if you need to use it I am willing to give it away.

When I worked for the Community and Senior Service in Los Angeles as a Safety Program Representative, the California Hiway Patrol was accepting used carseats. We used them as a training tool to teach the community the proper way of installing child safety seats. Try contacting CHP and see if you could donate it to them.

Hi R.,

Sita Helms, Advocate for children. You are correct Car seats can not be sold. But they can be given away. Many Non Profit groups help Military families, single parent, families who are struggling. Our group started out by Moms helping other Moms. You could also call a local MOPS group in your area or another easy way to help some one is put it on free things on Craig's List.

I am a low income Mom and I have bought all my baby stuff (and furniture and christmas gifts for my children) on craigslist. Yes even my infant carseat. Someone would love to meet you and take your carseat.(I sell clothes as my kids grow out of them. If you really don't want to post a babysale item, then post on their free page. (even though I don't have alot, I always buy- I worry free means it is too old and not cared for) Good luck!

freecycle.com is a great place to list it to give it away for free to a good home.

Either freecycle it or put it on Craigslist. I gave mine away to a friend - she knew me well enough to know it was safe and hadn't been in an accident.

Best wishes,

You can join your local Freecycle group. Go to freecycle.org and look for a group that is close to you. It is the best thing for getting rid of those things that you probably couldn't sell but you don't want to throw away. Everything posted must be for free. You can also post for things that you would like to find. I hope that helps you!

I'm having my 4th child in 7 weeks... ; )

Hello.
I remember that when I was pregnant with my first...
I had an out of date car seat.
If you call Babies R Us, they can give you the name of the company that does car seat installation workshops for them.
I can't remember the name of the company exactly.

Here is a link...

Anyway, they take old car seats that are expired and donate them to families in Tijuana.
They figure it's better to have a car seat than not have one at all.

Good luck.

You can sell old baby stuff to Children's Orchard or donate it to Laura's House. There are 2 Children's Orchards I know about, one in Lake Forest and the Other in Laguna Niguel
