Calling all Moms,
I am sure there has to be some of you moms out there that has a good suggestion for us. My son is 11 mnths old and has had this persistant runny nose. It is really thick with a little yellow tint to it. He doesn't run a fever. It seems like it has been going on since the first day it turned cold out. We have taken him to the doctor and they just tell us to give him O.C. meds. Well, I hate giving him medicine and it doesn't seem to help much anyway. Last night we were up most of the night because he couldn't breath. We suck his nose out but it doesn't seem to help either. We run the humidifier and elivate his bed.
He has also had ear infections but he did just get tubes placed a couple weeks ago. Everyone told us he would be less congested but uhhh it has not changed at all.
We jsut feel so bad for our little guy. Does anyone out there have any suggetions????? We are all in need of some ZZZZZZZZ's.
Thanks in advance,
T.

Could it be a new food he is trying? My 8 month old started eating yogert about a month ago and loves it, however his nose started running for about two weeks straight. I stopped giving him the yogert b/c it has whole milk in it and his nose stopped running about three days later.

My question is what kind of OTC meds are you using? Did the ENT who did the tubes comment on it, did you ask about the sinuses while you were visiting? If you have another follow up with the ENT I would definitely see what they have to say, they are experts in that field.

I have an asthmatic son who also has allergies and has had multiple sets of tubes. His nose wouldn't always run when his ears were infected (in fact sometimes he would wake up in the morning and his ears would start draining so heavy it would be all over his shirt :( ) And it had nothing to do with milk.

The OTC stuff you use can make a difference, but if he has significant allergies something like Singulair would be best (if my son stops taking his, he is a completely different kid within about 5 days). They make sprinkle packets of Singulair for ones as little as yours, you can add into some applesauce. I would be leary of Benadryl, it's very short acting and will only knock him out until it's done working. And as he gets a bit bigger it will make him hyperactive, not sleepy, as it does my son. Claritan is ok but generally does not block enough of the allergens most people suffer from.

Also, with the problems he's having breathing at night, does he wheeze at all? Does he cough a lot at night? The cough may be from all the sinus drainage, but I really think you should get a second opinion, get some kind of prescription medication to help dry him up, and maybe even talk to a pulminologist, someone well schooled in the respiratory system if the ENT doesn't have a good answer.

I've been there and feel for you! You'll get it all worked out, just check with another ped. and see what they think. Don't stop with the doctors until your satisfied, there is no reason for you to loose sleep or for your baby to be uncomfortable like that all the time!

All 3 of my babies have had this. It is so hard to figure out what it is. Colds and allergies have the same symptoms. Unfortunately, there are allergies in all 4 seasons. It turned out that all of my babies have allergies and asthma. Before our Ped. gave us Med. we used benadryl and saline nasal drops. The benadryl does make them tired, But sometimes that's what their little bodies need, after being miserable. Also, when they are teething they have a runny nose on top of their allergies. It's so hard when they can't let us know exactly what they are feeling. hope this helps.

We go through the same thing every few months. My son had to be put on a nebulizer when he was a few months old so I put just saline in it and give him that right before bed and then try to suck his nose out. Another thing an ER Dr. told me was be sure to put saline drops (Little Noses) in their nose before you suck it out. That loosens it all and makes it easier to suck out. It sounds like your doing everything we do...elevating the bed, using a humidifier. We've also used Infant Tylenol Cold and Cough. It seems to help a lot with Tyler.

I hope this helps and good luck!

My advice is to switch doctors. I have never had a dr. recomend over the counter meds for a baby. Your little guy probably has allergies and you should ask about getting him tested and getting some Zyrtec or singulair for allergies.

my doc told me that a runny nose for babies is actually pretty common whether they are sick or not(sometimes is't caused by teething). i found some infant saline drops called little noses at wal-mart for my daughter and they seem to help. just a few drops in each nostril and then suction. the moisture will loosen any crusties and the saline it self helps to open up clogged sinuses for easier breathing. also baby vix vapo rub helps to loosen congestion and the lavender scent helps soothe babies to sleep. if a warm mist vaporiser isn't helping much, try switching to a cool mist humidifier.

I would look into an allergy. Do you have pets? does he drink milk? eat cheese? etc....

I know how awful that is, my ds has had 3 ear infections this winter and lots of runny noses too. I do also believe that they get sick often because their building up their immune systems. I wish you the best and hope your child is feeling better soon.

My son is almost 4 now but had the same problem when he was about the same age. He has had ear tubes as well. I tried all kinds of medicines and nothing seemed to work. Every two weeks we were in the doctor for yet another ear infection, even after the tubes. He would just get so congested that his ears would fill up and there we would be. If he was on an antibiotic he was fine but if not his nose was horrible. I finally changed pediatricians and had him allergy tested. The allergy doctor put him on shots once a week and we havent had anymore problems. I hated having to have shots but the great thing was we were able to take him off after only 1 year of them. He very rarely has a runny nose know and hasnt had an ear infection in almost 2 yrs. If he does start getting congested know 1 or 2 doses of triaminc normally takes care of it. Hope your son feels better soon!

My son was always sick when he was a baby. I found out through allergy testing that he has many allegies. Be careful about giving his soy, because it is actually a very common allergen, and can be worse then dairy. My son is allergic to dairy and soy. Thank God I breastfed. The good news is that my son is now 7 years old and I can't even remember the last time he was sick. The bright side is that your little one is building up his immune system.

He is probably allergic to the milk that you are feeding him. My daughter had the same problem. She is allergic to vitamin D milk so we give her Soy milk (it actually tasts good!) they also have it in chocolate and vannila flavor. My daughter Loves it!

It might be this. try taking him off Vitamin D and having him try Soy. It should work. :-) hope this helps. Let me know! I hope he is better soon!

Take Care,
L. Kay

P.S. My Daughter has never had an ear infection because she is on Soy.

Have you tried Vick's vapor bath? Get it at the pharmacy or there's a generic (Johnson's) at Wal-Mart. You put a capful into the bath water and let him breathe the vapors. It has worked wonders for our 5 month old. He may even be old enough for the rub on type.

T., OC COLD Meds are OK if runny nose and congestion are caused by a cold. However our pediatrician suggested, "many times nasal congestion, sneezing etc. are caused by an allergy that in all likely hood will be outgrown. So try "DIMETAP" for infants ( it's like benadryl), and follow the dosage carefully as it will make the little ones very sleepy OR anxious. but if it works you will have the answer.

My 8 month old daughter currently has the same type of symptoms I use the kids suda care plug ins (I used them with my son too). I forgot the exact name to them but you plug it into the wall and it gives a eucalyptus(sp) type of smell and it makes it so much easier to breathe, it lasts about 4-5 hours. When I walk into the room, it clears me up too!

Good luck!

I know you don't like to give meds, but I like Pedia Care and Dimetap. Maybe just give it before he goes to bed and not during the day. Just judge on a day to day basis if he needs it that night or if he can do without. We used meds all the time, but in moderation and we didn't give it if she could do without. Other than some good ole nose sucking. That is my advice. Poor guy has had a runny nose for a long time:(
