I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old. I have stayed home for 3 years now, and I love it but would eventually like to go back to work when my children go to school. I'm trying to figure out a good career to go in with kids. I mean what do you do with your kids all summer if you work. I have thought about going into teaching I have about 80 units, so I would have to go back to school, but I don't know if I could handle teaching. My husband makes pretty good money, but not enough for us to buy a house, we still live in an apartment. Can anyone give me some suggestions please?

When my daughter started kindergarten, I applied at her school district as a special education instructional aide. That was 8 years ago and I still love it. I work same schedule as my daughter goes to school and have same days off (PAID!). Summer school is optional. We get sick days and paid vacation for winter break and spring break as well as holidays.

Since then, I have been so interested in the kids with autism with whom I work that I created a children's book about autism. Now I am working on my second book www.AisForAutism.net

I also spent a couple years selling stuff on ebay which was fun.

Good luck.

Personally, I think going back to school is a wonderful idea. If you enjoy education and it sounds like you must have some interest since you already have 80 units, then that is half the battle, finding something you really enjoy. I think a lot of people hesitate out of fear of failure or not being able to handle it, but you may surprise yourself and furthering your educations opens a lot of doors and is a great example to set for your children. When the time comes I hope to set an example for my son that education is one of the most important things that you can do for yourself. I can't think of anyone that I know that regretting getting an education but quite a few people that regret passing up that opportunity.

I have a 4 year old and my motivation was that I wanted her to start pre school. Otherwise, we would have not had enough $ if I were to continue to stay home to put her in school. I did go to teaching but I am not credentialed. I do have my BS though ( I know another teacher that does not have her degree yet, so its possible!). I applied at a Chrisitian school and am now
a full time teacher. Although it does not pay as much as I would like it to, it is fulfilling, my daughter looks up to me and I dont feel so dependent on my husband.BTW, I do get 2 1/2 weeks off for Christmas, 1 week off for Thanksgiving, 2 wks off for Easter and 2 1/2 months off for summer with pay all year round! This would mean having the same schedule of your kids schedules. It is worth it because if you choose to send your 4 year old to the school that you work, you also most likely will get a huge price break for his/her schooling. Another thing you can do is substitute teach BUT of course you never know your schedule unless you do what I did, get in good with teachers, build your reputation with principles and get long term sub jubs (this was in public schools). Good Luck!

Hi Cloe,

I have seven children and I know exactly where you are, my goal is to be a Psychologist. I was a stay at home mom for 15 years. It is tough to get back in the work force after that long. I found a great work at home business,(I have been involved with several others, some very well known but never got anywhere) This has a low investment, easy to sell products that you can also do fundraisers with, you can also make a residual income if you do not care to retail(best part is home parties are completely optional) and we offer phenomenal team support and training for free. We provide the training for free before you sign up because we want you to feel prepared before you make a decision. I set my own hours, I work when I can and go to school when I can and the rest of the time is for my family and household chores. My business is easy to interject into daily conversation, they are products I use myself everyday(have for years)but now I save money on them and because I am using them they sell themselves. It provides me an escape from the doldrums but keeps me busy when I am bored. Plus I have made some wonderful life long friends in the process. If I decide to work outside the home I can still do this too. I would be happy to send you some information and some scent samples. If you want the info fill out the form here www.LightMyFires.info Good Luck in what ever you decide to do.

Hi Cloe, I'm new to mamasource and I just read your post about not wanting to return to work. I understand how you feel and was wondering if you have found a home-based business that suits your needs and desires. I am the mother of two children, my son is now 20 years old and on his own and my daughter has special needs and is 11 going on 16! I recently started my own home based business selling Mia Bella Gourmet Scented Candles. I love burning scented candles in my home and these by far are the best smelling and cleaner burning! This company offers an excellent compensation plan and you can focus your business or retail, fundraising or team building. The start up cost is very low and with it you will receive your own website. If you are still searching for a home business I'd like to invite you to visit my website and take a look at the products. I've included other links below for you to look at at your own convenience.

If you have any questions and want to speak with me, my numbers are listed below. I look foward to hearing from you.

Best of luck in your search,

Okay... I just got on mamasource for the first time tonight and have been reading through blogs. Yours caught my eye, so I thought I would touch base. I have recently stated my own business. I have been in corporate America for the last 12 years (plus more if you count how long I have been working in total) and make a very good salary. However, I have no time to spend with my 5 & 2 year old. I decided I needed something more. It's not a get rich quick scheme, but it's not "selling" either. It is something you can do at any pace, depending on how much time you have or how much you truly want to make. And you can spend time with you children whenever you want (what is what really got me started). This company will pay you for whatever you put into it. You can work as little as 5 to 10 hours a week or as much as you want to meet your goals and dreams. It's in the financial services arena (which I hate to say to people, because they always get scared off for no reason at all), but it doesn't take knowledge, it takes desire and values and a willingness to learn. We help people with income management, debt protection, retirement planning, and goal planning (home purchases included)... etc. It's not a fly by night company. The company I work with has been around for 30 years and the parent company has been around longer. I'm not sure what you are allowed to post or not post on this site, but my email address is ____@____.com and if your serious about making money (especially part time), let me know.

Parents I know will often get a job at a school (not necessarily as a teacher), but just an office position or otherwise, at a school or the school their child goes to... that way, their job is on the same "schedule" as their child, and things such as picking them up, dropping them off etc. is easier. Some parents also, choose to get a job at their child's school so that their tuition (if you go to private school) is either "free" or at a reduced cost (one of the benefits of being an "employee" at the school). Yes, what to do with your child when they are on summer break... that's hard when the Parent works a traditional job. Your child would have to go to summer programs... which costs money, and you have to budget that into your expenses because summer programs are not cheap.
In either case, start looking now... jobs at schools are not always easy to get into, as positions don't always open up and the ones who work there, like to stay there... especially if you want a job at a specific school.

As far as work... you could go the "virtual assistant" route... working from home doing computer work.(look it up online) Or figure out a stay-at-home-work-at-home business to do... this would offer more flexibility per scheduling and being able to stay home with the kids and being there for them after school or on breaks.

For me, I have my own online boutique to make extra pocket change. Everyone is different. It's good you are researching it now... plan ahead, that's all I can recommend. You'll get lots of ideas here I"m sure.
Good luck,
~Susan

Hi Cleo, I would definately recommend a home based business. It will allow you to have flexible hours, be home when the kids are sick, earn money wether you need 200 a month or 20,000 a month, you determine what your income will be. Im sure you will receive many emails with different busines opportunities. I suggest taking a look at those that really offer something you are interested in. This will help you sick with it. Make sure the co. is over 5 years old and that if its a networking opportunity, that they are a member of the direct selling assoc. I would love for you to take a look at what i do. I work fulltim at home and my business is in the health & wellness industry. Here is a short 8 minute call you can listen to for more info. ###-###-#### or www.arbonne.com/company/sizzle.html

I too wanted to earn some extra income for our family. I was a stay at home mom of a then 18th month old boy and looking to contribute to our family. I was lucky enough to find a company that I loved and could make great money at the same time. I am a Princess House consultant, I have been a consultant for over 8 years now, what I love about it is, I can work my own schedule around my families needs and still make about $25 an hour. I now have 2 kids and still doing the business. Check out my website at

I have found a great stay at home business called Isagenix. It is so great because their mission is “Our vision is to impact world health and free people from physical and financial pain, and in the process create the largest health-and-wellness company in the world,” say Jim and Kathy Coover.
I am so excited to be working with a company with such a great mission!!!
I started with a 30 day cleanse myself and just share with my friends and family how to clease after I personally felt the benifits. Some people that want a quick start on fat loss do the 9 day system. Here is my website to check it out http://funtobefit.isagenix.com
All of the prices you see are retail, but if you click sign up and save you just pay and $36 membership fee and you will get your own website as well as wholesale prices. If you have more questions feel free to contact me anytime.
