Unmotivated 16 Year Old

My 16 year old daughter is very smart, but is very unmotivated to complete her school work, therefor seems to be running a C average in almost everything. I speak to her teachers who say she 'drifts off' in class. She often gets zeros for homework she 'does not feel like doing'. I realize a C average is not the end of the world, but I know she is capable of more and would like her to be able to go to college. I have taken away privliges, offered incentives, etc, and she says she will do better, and may for a very short time, then its back...

I have a 16 year old daughter who is very smart, but she doesn't do her work at school. She has always just gotten by. This bothers me, because I try to excel in whatever I do, but she just accepts mediocrity and I don't believe she tries hard. I just got her progress report and she is not passing any classes. I don't think she's into drugs. She could probably be having sex because I can't monitor her every move, but she does have to be in the house by 9 week day and week end. Her father and I just put her on punishment for the bad...

Classical Education or Catholic School?

What are your experiences with Classical Education? We are trying to decide between a classical charter school and a private Catholic school. I'd love to hear your experiences with either. I went to Catholic school so I have more knowledge about that. Thanks in advance!

Who Pays for College...?

Are we as parents obligated/responsible for paying for our kids college? In a perfect world we would all have started a college fund when they were babies and at college age it would be enough to put any of them through the school of their choice.... but I digress. Let's put anyone's financial stability aside for now. I don't think it is our obligation to pay for college, should we help if we can sure, will some loans be incurred, sure. But as far as a yes/no answer, I say no. What say you... My son DOES have scholarships already to...

15 Year Old Son Is Trying to Control

My 15 year old son and I have a great relationship most of the time, but he feels he has the right to tell me what to do sometimes and if I don't do what he says, he gets angry. I have explained to him that I am the adult and am quite capable of running my own life but I appreciate his concern. While I realize he is only looking out for me, sometimes it is downright overbearing. Anyone have any ideas on how to help?

To Homeschool or Not to Homeschool

My seven year old has recently started requesting to be homeschooled. She is a great kid but complains that she does not have any friends at school. I have talked to her teacher and basically her problem is that she is very well behaved and has her own solid ideas. She would rather play by herself than do something she knows is wrong or something she doesn't want to do. I am so proud of her for not doing something just because everyone else is doing it. It does create problems for her though with other students. My question is what are...

Teens and Homework

Does anyone know how to encourage a 15 yr old teen to do their homework? She seems not to care whether it's done or not and has a lot of missing assignments. She is struggling with algebra and I don't even know why they put her in this class because she didn't really understand the previous work. Teacher communication with this teacher is horrible!!!

Advice on K12 Online School

Hi, I am going to do the k12 online school with my kindergarten son.We live in a district that has only all day kindergarten available. My son has been in school 4 weeks now, and is having a hard time with the long school days. I have already had problems, with the schools additude from the first week of school. They have told me wrong answers to questions, and then have turned around and told me something else. They make it out that I was wrong. They are very off hand, and do not take responsibility for what they have told me. They do...

It feels like I have lost all controll of things when it comes to her. She no longer has the respect for me she once did, and can be very disrespectful, and quite mean and hurtful. She is a sophmore in college prep highschool wich is 2 hours away from home. Last year she could not wait to go, Her brother is a senior at another high school prep school, Now this year she...

15 Year Old Wants to Move in with Dad for the Coming School Year.

10 years ago, I met and married a man who lived 3 hours from my hometown. Two of my children and I moved here to be with him. My 16 year old (now 26) asked to live with his dad. He was an angry young man and it hurt terribly, but I knew that if I forced him to come live with me and give up all he knew that it would make things worse. He never was and still is not a person who likes or deals well with change. Needless to say, he made some mistakes, but has turned out to be a fine young man. He has also told me since that he wished he...
