6 Year Old Allowance

My daughter is almost 6 years old. She has no concept of money. She thinks that it is ALWAYS available to her. I want to start giving her an allowance, so she can buy her own afternoon snacks at school and whatever toys she thinks she must have. My question is how much of allowance do you give to a 6 year old? What are the task she must do, in order to earn the money? What about deductions, when she doesn't do anything? Thanks for your help in advance. K.

10 Year Old Defiant Son

I am so desperate for any advice from other parents of 10 year old boys. My son is not at all respectful of my discipling him, he doesn't care what I threaten him with. He is afraid if I say I am going to go get dad though. I just don't know what to do to get him to understand that what I say goes. He also says he doesn't care if he fails his classes, although we have treatened punishment and offered incentives to doing well. He will do good one week and the next doesn't care. I guess I would just like to know that there are other moms out...

Help! My 10 Year Old Daughter.

I have a beautiful 10 year old daughter. She has so many clothes and they are all very fashionable but I swear, every morning she comes down looking like a nut case. She insist on wearing things that do not match. She does not dress sexy or anything that is out of control but she refuses to put any time in her appearance. Her older brother(16) picks on her but she has learned to ignore him. She is properly covered but sometimes she wears the most hideous outfits. Nothing that was bought together. She is somewhat a girly girl but she...

Hands-On Building Toys (That Are Not Legos) Recommendations

My 7 y/o son likes to do things with his hands. Though he likes Legos, he prefers toys that allow him to use his own creativity. He plays with his Lincoln Logs and also doubles the Jenga pieces to build stuff. Does anyone have any suggestions? We have something called Magnext(magnetic marbles and interlocking plastic pieces) from overseas but I haven't seen them in stores here.

Is Buying Used Car Really That Much Saving?

I have a 10 year old car that is about at it's life's end. I bought it new for $22K. I can sell the car for $2k now. So basically the car cost me $2k a year to own. I am looking at this new car that is a really good deal - 5k off the sticker price. I plan to keep the car for 10 years. The new car will cost me $17k. I can buy a 2 year old version of this car for $15k but really I'm thinking the 2k isn't worth it since once you get a few years on the car you need more maintenace (new brakes, etc). I've also look at other used cars ( I don't...

My Son Has a Doll

The last time we were at Wal Mart I told my 5 year old son he could choose a toy. He chose a baby doll that you can feed. I had my reservations, but I bought it for him. In the spirit of multiculturalism he chose a doll that speaks Spanish and a boy w/a doll crossed the gender barrier as well. I was nervous about it, but I see it as a positive thing. His dad is pretty absent. My son has fed the doll and put it to bed and been the daddy. I think it's positive that he is rehearsing a male role that was never modeled for him with his...

Fun Educational Videos for Toddlers/kids When Traveling.

We are moving to MO in April and driving. It'll be about a 22 hour journey with our toddler. I was wondering what educational videos you have enjoyed for your kids. We will have a portable DVD player to hopefully keep him somewhat content. We have baby signing time and really enjoy that. I know they have Elmo's World, Veggie Tales, Dora the Explorer, Blues Clues. I'm just not sure which ones are good and actually teach a lot. Thanks for the advice.

I Can't Stand Candyland! Need Ideas for Other Games!

Hi Moms, I have a little girl who will be three in one week. I stay home with her and really enjoy it. However, she loves games and I think I will go crazy if I have to play Candyland or Chutes and Ladders one more time. We also have Memory and the card game Go Fish (these I don't mind). I am hoping that some of you great moms will be able to suggest some other three year old appropriate games for us! (We are all set when it comes to arts and crafts, reading, make believe, etc. It is just game time that has me stumped!! ...

Almost 6-Year-old Wants a Nintendo DS or a Wii

My almost 6-year-old has been pleading for a Nintendo DS or the Wii, like all his cousins and some of his friends have. My mother-in-law really wants to get him one for his upcoming birthday, but my husband and I are not sure we want him to have one. We're concerned that even if we restrict his usage of it, it will be addictive and he will be less interested in his usual activities --- reading, art, t-ball, scooter riding, music, imaginative play, etc. He's the usual energetic kind of boy but we love that he has a creative and...

6 Year Old Terrified to Go Upstairs

My 6 year old son sleeps on the floor by my bed every night. He is too scared to even GO upstairs alone and ABSOLUTELY won't go in his room without escort even in broad daylight. It has been going on forever. Although we had a brief period when he was around 4 when he slept in his room all night, he began waking in the middle of the night and tearing down the hall, pounding down the stairs and getting in bed with us -- heart racing, breathing hard, truly scared. We would take him back up and sit there for sometimes an hour while he went...
