The business that I am involved with is really suffering in this economy and we have taken 20% salary cuts. I am at my wit's end to make ends meet. I paint well but the market is down for people buying art from the galleries. Has anyone had any success selling art on-line?

I have an etsy shop, http://www.jeweledambrosia.etsy.com

I can say, it's tanked for a while, and lots of people's shops are really slow.

Art usually does better on places like 1000 Markets, I think.

You can open an etsy say, and may do well, but you can't rely on etsy to bring in your customers alone. You have to have great photos of the art and such, and you have to promote yourself as well outside, by setting up a social networking site if necessary to generate interest and links back to your shop, or just by handing out business cards.

It depends on the type of art you make, but you could do some research on consigning or putting it in a gallery. It all just depends on what you can do.

Feel free to contact me though, I'm an etsy seller mentor and have helped a lot of people get their shops started.

I have a friend who markets her items on etsy.com. Not sure how successful she is, though.

You might want to look at Zazzle and CafePress too - then people can buy things like cards and mugs (whatever you set up) imprinted with your images too.

My aunt's sister has always sold her paintings on ebay with a lot of luck. Her day job did not allow enough time to put herself out there any other way. Alternatively, have you considered Etsy? It's an incredible site dedicated to everything handmade. I've seen everything from paintings, to jewelry to clothes on there. It's a great community. Best of luck to you!
