My friend is turning 40 this December and we want to go away for a weekend to celebrate. Our first thought was to go to Mexico to an all-inclusive but that seems just to scary these days. We would like some place that is warm so we can lay by the pool. What would you suggest?

What can I do next?

In case you'd still consider it--if you do more research you'll find all the violence in Mexico is really revolving around specific border areas and inland. The resort areas have not been targeted or have seen any rise in violence. We went to Playa del Carmen last May and it was wonderful!

But if that's no longer an option, I'd second the idea of Key West and Puerto Rico. Both places that should have nice weather and a great night life. (If you're looking for lots of long stretches of beach though, Key West doesn't have them. More poolside fun.)

I agree with Plays del Carmen or Cancun all inclusive. Have fun!

Scottsdale AZ has some nice resorts but can be pricey. Ohh, Dec. though. Weather is great in AZ in Dec. but not necessarily hot enough for a pool.

You can get fantastic deals on hotels and flights to Las Vegas. Southwest flies there from many different locations. Also, Napa or Sonoma in California could be great -- maybe not hot enough for the pool though. I saw that someone recommended South Carolina, not sure that would be warm enough in Dec either.

A weekend in December is tough because the weather is iffy anywhere in the US. We have family in Scottsdale and have been to FL n Bahamas that time of year and u have about a 50/50 chance of it being hot enough to lay out in the sun. If u take a long weekend (4 days) then u can go to Puerto Rico or St. Thomas and u won't need a passport. Right now we are looking at air/hotel packages for a FULL week in Nov fr Chicago for as low as $650. If u take a 530 am flight u can be poolside by 3 and on the return leave there at 3 and be home around midnight. So a Thurs- Sun trip is totally doable w/ 2 full days to play. Good luck!

Playa Del Carmen, Mexico isn't bad if you stay together.
Arizona, as Birdie mentioned.
What about the wine country of California?
I have never been, but apparently San Antonio, Texas is a great place to visit.
The Sanctuary, Kiawa, Island South Carolina.

Celebrate early and go to Disney's Wine and Dine Festival in October. My friend did that for her 40th and had the best time!
